They say up to 1 million children are now orphans. There is great concern for the future of these children. So many of them, many are given numbers as their names arent known.
What can we do to help these children? It is so unbelievably sad.

Adoption agencies warned off Haiti's orphans By Guy Adams
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/adoption-agencies-warned-off-haitis-orphans-1871972.html
----quote---- For newly orphaned children wandering the streets of Haiti's capital begging for food, it sounds like a dream come true. But agencies trying to evacuate children whose parents died in last week's earthquake have been criticised for bypassing proper adoption processes to rush them to families offering new lives in the West. ..............................
In a statement yesterday, the charity SOS Children's Villages stressed to couples thinking of adopting children from Haiti that the move can be stressful and unsettling, and lead to long-term psychological problems for infants who have grown up in an alien culture.
"When you see any child who has lost their family on the news, your natural instinct is to want to go and pick them up and cherish them," it read. "You should not feel guilty about this instinct, it is part of being human and most of us share it. Sometimes international adoption is the right solution for a child but far more often it is not. Instead we suggest you do something positive about your protective feelings for these children." ----end quote---- |

To match children to appropriate adoptive parents takes a long time. Parents need to be veted and then they need to be monitored to see if they match the childs needs and if the child is comfortable and settled with them.
Lets hope these children are protected by the charities, so they don't become commodities.
My instinct is to get on a plane to Haiti and find a child that needs a hug! I could read stories and try to make children laugh..... But I could get in the way of the serious charities and perhaps I am better just sending some cash.
If I went over there I would want to scoop up the children and bring them back to the UK.
Children need food, water, shelter, education and LOVE!
Is it better for them to stay in Haiti? Or for someone to adopt them?
Personally if they have extended family then I think they are best to stay in Haiti.
But if they really have no family in the broader sense then I think they should be allowed to be adopted.
It is SO sad....long term these children need to be cared for and loved...and be aware of their families culture......There is not a quick and simple solution. |
