NAMs Prepare to Ensure Accountability and Transparency By Saikou Jammeh
National Assembly members vowed to pursue their mandate to ensure transparency and accountability in all government sectors – an activity they argued, is not meant to witch-hunt any body or group.
With less than 24 months to the deadline of government’s strategic plan to reduce the 58 percent poverty level by a two percentage point annually (PRSP 2), deputies were told poverty still remains high in the country. This was disclosed to them during a two-day sensitization workshop organized by Pro-PAG to popularize the Annual Progress Report of PRSP 2.
This revelation has prompted lawmakers to make a recommendation that each sector of government would send its programme to parliament for scrutiny before the presentation of the budget. “… for sectors to bring in their programmes before the budget is important as it will help us decide whether to increase or decrease when necessary,” said the Minority Leader and Member for Kiang West, Momodou L K Sanneh during a press conference held at the end of the programme.
Member for Foni Brefet, Bintanding Jarju said development must be attacked jointly, adding, “in doing so we have to dialogue, communicate and talk, but we do not witch hunt: “If we go to sectors it’s because our people want to know what the sectors are doing or about to do… monies allocated must address the needs of the people. So we must be in a position to know whether the monies allocated are properly used”.
Meanwhile, the event availed NAMs the opportunity to know how far stakeholders have gone in the implementation of PRSP which they said, is good, thumbing-up Pro-PAG for the initiative.
The Majority Leader Fabakary Tombong Jatta said the better informed they were the more effective they would become. “A more informed National Assembly makes a better decision.”
