More powers for the President, as Jammeh grabs both the Gambia Ports Authority (GPA) and the Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and effectively put the sea and air borders under his surveilance. Is this development motivated by politics or economics? My preliminary guess is the former, politics. As the Professor continues to shake up his armed forces, burying a powerful number of senior officers under the hot lava of the Gambia's security volcano, there are growing concerns of clandestine importation of arms, amunition, and military gear into the country by private businesses some of whiich are connected to some fallen generals in the army. The Gambia government had earlier issued a statement urging every Gambian, civilian or otherwise to surrender all undeclared military hardware in their possession; and to desist from wearing military uniform or any semblance of it, or risk arrest and prosecution. The government is gravely worried that there is infiltration of arms into the country. Again I maintain that no amount of power grabbing will increase the security of the President and his APRC government. The security of the President, his government, and the Gambia as a whole can be guaranteed only by true democratization and personal freedom and liberty for all Gambians.

The office of the president is assigning itself a lot of functions. The rapidly fattening professor is now in charge of Religion, Agriculture, Defense, and what not... He can't possibly be effectively multitasking all these functions.
The professor is clearly biting more than he can chew. It is obvious that his regime is now a low hanging fruit. This "imperial presidency" can not last! |

These are all signs of a regime in disarray. This move yet again highlights, Jammeh's insecurity and mistrust of all.
The fact that there are reports of arms having or already being brought into the nation demonstrates that there are those in the lower and higher echelons of Gambian society who are fed-up and ready to die for change.
Though I would welcome change, I'm deeply concerned that change may only occur by the barrel of a gun and not by the ballot.
May God bless and protect our nation and her diverse peoples. |
