Sidia on Kyoto Protocol and Trade Liberalisation
The National Assembly Member of Wuli West Hon. Sidia Jatta said the nullification of the Kyoto Protocol would not be for the interest of the so-called Third World countries that are emitting a fragment of what is destroying the world.
Hon. Jatta made these assertions while contributing to the debate on the Report of the 55th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Conference held in Arusha, Tanzania, which was laid before deputies by Hon. Member for Janjangbureh on Thursday, 10th December, 2009.
Sidia’s contribution is as below: “The Commonwealth is a metamorphosis of the British Empire by refinement to what is now called Commonwealth, composed of legally equal sovereign states. I underline the word legally equal sovereign states.
Before independence the empire existed and all the countries which are now members of the commonwealth were colonies and were members of the British Empire. But now that they have achieved legal independence and they have now become sovereign, the empire could not hold anymore. So something else had to take it place and that’s why they come up with the commonwealth of equal sovereign states. Whether equality is complete, that is another matter for debate. I am not going to delve into that. But madam speaker what is of primary concern for me here in this report is where they talk about the Kyoto protocol of 1997. And here the report is saying the upcoming conference in Copenhagen in March, they will seek to have a successor to the Kyoto protocol.” Sidia said that the designers of the successor to the Kyoto Protocol would want a new protocol instead of the Kyoto protocol. He intimated that they would want Kyoto protocol nullified and be replaced by something that is not going to be in interest of those who have signed the Kyoto protocol; “ we who are in the third world, we who are notindustrialized, we who are emitting a fragment of what is destroying the world.”
According to him “for years, the Kyoto protocol has existed and we all remember second to China, US is the big pollutant of the world. But they systematically refused to sign this protocol.” He added that those who are going to Demark, particularly those in the so called third would countries, should make a united front against any move to nullify the Kyoto protocol. He said if they fail the next protocol is going to be in the interest of those who are polluting the earth. “That is why I said it is not going to be in the interest of the so-called third would countries to nullify the Kyoto protocol and replace it with another one which is going to be prepared in that place. He told the national Assembly members;”I think we should all start struggling here. We should talk. We should talk while the conference is going on. We should talk against anything that is going to nullify the Kyoto protocol. We must all participate because the earth is in danger and those who are polluting it are not prepared to assume responsibility.”
Sidia further said:”And Madam Speaker, the other thing which is of concern to me is wherethey are saying the conference declared their support for trade liberalization policy.” He said that the current experience on Trade liberalization is not in the interest of the third world because Industrialised countries and China are asking third World Countries to liberalise trade. He indicated that this leads to the Opening of their markets for the goods of China and other industrialized countries to be dumped. According to him third world countries are getting the imanufactured goods that we want, so the temptation will not be there for you to become industrilised…. We must think critically about this. Do you know that China is evenbuying land in Africa. I promised you China and not only China, theythe industrilised world are buying land in Africa. Why? Because they want to produce raw materials now for themselves, for their industries.I have documentations. Land is being bought in Africa by these developed countries. because they do not have any more land ..All these are meant to kill our initiative towards industrialisation. Sidia urged developing countries to strive to add value to their raw materials and generate employment.
