Thursday, 17 December 2009 Ousman Sonko, the minister of Interior has confirmed that the decentralisation of the newly introduced Biometric Identification System has already started.
According to him, on Wednesday, 18th November, 2009, a new branch was inaugurated in Kanifing along the Jimpex Road to give access to the communities in the Kanifing municipality and the surounding. These statements where contained in a question and answer sheet read on his behalf by Marie-Saine-Firdaus, the attorney general and minister of Justice at the National Assembly on Wednesday evening.
Elsewhere around the country, he said, a survey has been done and sites have been identified in various administrative regions. In the Lower River Region, a structure has been identified in Soma at the Old Trust Bank building just about 60 metres from Soma Immigration Post. In the NBR, a site has been identified along the Farrafenni/Bamba Tenda highway just about 90 metres from the main junction linking Farrafenni to Lamin Koto. In Basse, two sites have been identified and in Brikama, Western Region, a similar site has also been identified, he said.
According to Minister Sonko, in addition to these new proposed sites, a mobile unit of the GAMBIS has been introduced to increase access to the public. This unit will be visiting different venues to issue biometric ID Cards and residential permits. The initial focus shall be strategic institutions such as government ministries and parastatals, he explained.
2010 driving licence As to the introduction of a well-tailored driving license scheme in the new year, Minister Sonko said that all the necessary logistic are in place and preparations are at an advanced stage to introduce the biometric driver's license next year. The consultant firm, Pristine Consulting is currently training personnel of the Gambia Police Force to this end.
He further assured the deputies that his ministry will provide vehicles to various police stations throughout the country and will also maintenance those vehicles with breakdown as part of efforts meant to give affordable and accessible logistic to the police.
Skills training for prisoners Minister Sonko further informed members that the Gambia Prison Service has built skills training centres for training of interested and willing prisoners to learn trades during their term in prison. According to him, the services include a tailoring workshop for adult prisoners where experienced and non-experienced convicted prisons are trained. Some of the uniforms of the inmates she added are sewn by prisoners as part of their training. In addition to the tailoring workshop, she said, interested prisoners are also trained in different skills such as motto mechanic, carpentry, electrical wiring, wielding and plumbing.
