I thought the professor was always blaming the west on their migration policy and the forced returns of illegal migrants to their homeland....

Another example of extreme hypochrisy ?

It is well known that there are many "Aliens" in the Gambia, and most of them cannot make enough money to make a living AND pay for a permit, which is now over D1000,what happens then ? the police and immigration do checks on "Aliens" to acertain if they have permits, surprise, many do not,are they arrested and deported ? sometimes perhaps, but in most instances the matter is dealt with in another way, no need for me to explain, saleries are small in The Gambia OR put another way as the quote from the newspaper has it,"The Gambian immigration has been accused on many occasions by even some Gambians for their unprofessional conduct in executing raids on offenders. Majority of nationals from these countries affected are engaged in menial jobs or petty trading activities, which makes it difficult for them to meet the requirement. And it has always been a matter of cat and mouse game between them and a specially trained unit of the Gambian immigration."
As permits must be paid for up front. However it maybe that there is a wind of change blowing and the electric broom has now become supercharged and those tasked with enforcing the regulations told in no uncertain terms, no permit deportation, this will have the desired effect on those who can to buy a permit as soon as they can,
Its all about money, as usual.

GDP Per Capita for Belgium 48,000 USD and for Gambia 490 USD. Belgium has 100 times wealthier. Belgium population is declining, the population is getting older. Gambia's population is growing and there are more youth for the job market. All those immigrants require, job, education, health services, garbage collection. Are you being fair to make your statement comparing Gambia and West? So do you think it is extreme hypocricy? I am not sure about that.

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

Well be it African or Non African, its fair for every one to contribute a little to a country that provide u shelter and job.The alien permite is a contribution to the coffer of the Gambian just as Gambians are paying tax in other countries they are immigrants in.So if u want to live in another man's country, you must obey their laws or simply leave.

There is no egg without a chicken, and no chicken without egg.

Alien permit is different from tax. These so-called aliens are paying tax every time they buy something or earn a salary/wage.Raiding fellow Africans and deportating them to their equally impoverished countries is inhumane and runs contrary to the spirit of Pan-africanism. Deportation should be based on bad behavior (criminal behavior)...

"These so-called aliens are paying tax every time they buy something or earn a salary/wage." Maybe but as most of them work in the "black" economy( not a raciest use of the word just a commonly accepted term ) they are unlikly to be taxpayers in that sense.

It is hard to tax income earned from the "black economy", because a lot of the income from this economy goes undeclared even in the U.S.
However, it is the duty of everyone, both Gambians and aliens, to declare all their incomes from all sources. This is what the IRS (U.S.A.) and the Income Tax (The Gambia) hopes everyone does. Failure to declare income for the purpose of taxation may result in criminal charges of tax evasion. But tax evasion again is different from tax avoidance-which is legitimate and lawful.
If any alien is found evading tax, his/her deportation may be lawfully based on that conviction. But it is also importatnt that the Gambia's Income Tax Department expand administrative methods to widen and ease the declaration of income by those working in the informal sector of the economy (the "black economy").
The government is the largest employer in the Gambia. The private sector is not well developed. Most people work in the informal sector (the so-called black economy), and the last time I checked they don't pay income tax

To boil things down then, the government stands no chance of collecting income tax from those in the black economy as they have no idea of jobs people are doing for their survival.
