Climate aid billions not new funds
08. dec. 2009

When the rich countries of the European Union promise to send billions of kroner in aid to the poorest regions of the world as part of a global climate agreement, it is questionable how generous the offer really is, according to daily newspaper Berlingske Tidende.

A substantial portion of the funds come from cuts in the EU countries' existing aid budgets. Thus, many poor countries in Africa, Asia, and South America won't see the infusion of funds which heads of state and government across the world have been promising them.

This information stems from a confidential EU memo, which British aid organization Oxfam has come into the possession of.

The method of recycling development aid as climate aid could possibly lead to the collapse of negotiations for a global climate agreement.

The African countries have agreed on a - secret - demand for funding, and are unwilling to compromise, and the Mali delegation confirms that any agreement without additional new funds would be unacceptable.

True! It all boils down to MONEY.Poorer, Third World countries want more of it as payment for any agreement; while the richer, First World countries want to spend or pay less of it.
Even Russia, I understand, wants to sell (convert into dollars) its unused 'emission allowances' from Kyoto. Meanwhile, much of U.S. is covered in a blizard of snow as the talks continue in Denmark's "Hope 'n' Hagen" as it is now refered to. Good havens, thanks to Al Gore!

Kay, there are intense negotiations and lobbying going on here in Copenhagen.

Yesterday there was a short interview of Gambia’s chief negotiator Mr. Pa Ousman Jarju Department of Water Resources about a leaked Danish Document. The draft to a climate agreement, made by among others Denmark, the US and Great Britain was going to sideline the UN and give more power to the rich nations and the World Bank. “The single agreement which is really geared toward bringing America on board and all the other parties and killing the Kyoto protocol is something that is a none starter for us. We cannot accept it and we will not accept it” said Mr. Sarr to the Danish Television (DR).

Danish document threatens climate deal

A leaked Danish proposal for a global climate agreement could threaten the possibility of a successful result on the UN climate summit in Copenhagen. That is the message from the G77 group, which numbers 130 developing countries, including China.

The warning came from the spokesman for the G77 group, Di-Aping of the Sudan, on a press conference held in Bella Center, Copenhagen last night.

- The proposal from Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen does not mention the needs of developing countries, but only advances the interests of developed countries, Di-Aping says of the document, which the British newspaper The Guardian has come into the possession of.

Both the the Prime Minister's Department and the Ministry of Climate and Energy deny that the leaked document represents a proposal for a finalized climate agreement.

I think this whole global warming/climate crisis thing is a ruse and nothing more. We should be worried more about more pressing needs instead of worrying about the amount of water that is melting at the mountain ranges.

No seriously...do you think the economic behemoths of the day will scale back on the amount of carbon emmissions that has paved the way for stuff like refrigerators, air conditioners, cars, and other luxuries while my forefathers toiled on donkeys? Even if they do and find smarter sources to continue those luxuries, at what cost will it be for a poor farmer in Baddibu, Kiang or Jarra for example to access those smarter sources? Dude, I am not super bright, but something tells me that the cost to those smarter sources are going to be exorbitant. It is all a manipulation of some sorts.

Anyway, my point is we are least serious when it comes to simpler things like making sure that everyone on the planet has food to eat. How can we be taken seriously when it comes to the climate when we have even lee control over it. Only the naive one will buy this "Hopenhagen" shenanegan.

Okay what are you doubting, the fact of the global warming or the sincerity and plausibility of the methods to combat it?

Both. And in the case of global warming, I strongly take issue to the claim that carbon emmissions are causing the glaziers to melt.
