Opposition is Dead in The Gambia
Abdoulie Mambureh

Lamin Waa Juwara, the governor of lower river region cum the leader of the national democratic action movement has said that the opposition in the Gambia is not in coma but dead.

Mr. Juwara made this remarks recently in an exclusive interview with this reporter at his Brikama residence.

Reacting to the UDP campaign manager Mr. Femi Peter’s statements to Umaru Fofana of the BBC article in his recent interview on focus on Africa Magazine.

Mr. Juwara said the BBC reporter was fed by those who are on the periphery of the Gambia opposition politics.

The NDAM leader said the BBC correspondent did not have a grasp of the situation in the Gambia as far as the opposition is concerned. This would have been clearly spelt out if Umaru had contacted people like him.

Juwara lashed out at UDP campaign manager Femi Peters that he has never held any political office in the Gambia and he is not known outside Banjul and does not know the country despite the fact that he calls himself the campaign manager of the UDP.

Juwara explained that Femi Peter’s role as far as he knows is to go to the police to obtain permit for the rallies because he Juwara was the propaganda secretary of the UDP when the party was kicking and alive.

LRR Governor said Femi Peters is not to speak on behalf of opposition politics in the Gambia.

Mr. Juwara countered that for Femi Peters to state that Ousainou Darboe has been at the helm for so long because he is the fittest is a blatant lie and an insult to all those who were in leadership position of the opposition politics in the Gambia like him.

He explained that when the five party alliances NADD was formed it was clearly spelt out in the memorandum of understanding that the presidential candidate for the alliance was to be selected through a primary election. Mr. Juwara disclosed that it was Ousainou Darboe who pulled out of the Alliance because he feared such a contest knowing that he would be defeated by people like him.

Mr. Juwara said Darboe pulled out of the NADD Alliance because he wanted to be selected as the presidential candidate without a contest.

Why do you have to run away from a challenge when you are the fittest he asked?

LRR governor said the opposition in the Gambia is dead because he sounded the alarm that pulling out of the NADD Alliance would tantamount to committing political suicide.

Juwara said that the democratic credentials of the ruling party are far better than those of the opposition in the Gambia.

Mr. Juwara further said that he is on record to have said several times that the 2006 election was free and fair and that there is no credible challenge democratically to president Jammeh’s leadership as the opposition who claimed to be democratic is most undemocratic.

Mr. Juwara revealed that a typical example of the undemocratic nature of the opposition was highlighted in his case when he challenged Darboe’s leadership as an executive member of the UDP and the propaganda secretary. Some undemocratic members of Darboe kitchen cabinet decided to expel him from the party.

Mr. Juwara said he was selected as the propaganda secretary at a congress held in 2000 in absentia which shows or demonstrated the marked degree of respect and support from the UDP then.

“How on earth a few people could decide to expel me and then claimed to be democratic”? He enquired.

Mr. Juwara however concluded that under the present political, social and economic circumstances president Jammeh will win the 2011 election. with a landslide.
