UDP Asks IGP, GRTS' DG to Resign By Lamin Njie & Saihou Jammeh
The Inspector General of Police, Essa Badjie and the Director General of the Gambia Radio and Television Services, Mr. Modou Sanyang have come under intense criticism during a rally organised by the United Democratic Party on Saturday calling on them to resign.
Essa Badjie at one end was criticised by the activists for denying them permit to hold rallies which is against the spirit of Gambian constitution and democratic norms, while Modou Sanyang also gets his share of the cake for refusing to feature the activities of their Party on both the state television and radio.
Speaker after speaker sneered at the two senior government officials for what they termed as ‘inequity’ behavior in the conduct of their functions in the public offices. “There are other people in the Police who are more educated and more talented than the current Inspector General of Police, but it is because of his sycophancy that he was promoted to the position,” says Lawyer Darboe, driving the point home that, “We will continue to hold rallies with or without permit, though we will apply”.
Darboe went on to say that, “for Modou Sanyang he cannot even speak good English. All he does is to be sitting beside President Jammeh at his farm in Kanilai”.
According to him both Sanyang and Badjie know that they are not qualified for the positions they are occupying so the only way to secure them is to always please the President.
Lang Touray, another activist speaking on the occasion said it is better to gather your children and tell them tales than to watch GRTS. “I was sad when the police came here [rally venue] asking us for our permit,” UDP Youth Leader Birang Bass Kongira said, adding that, “We are telling them to extend the message to IGP Essa Badjie that UDP is a registered political party”.
He said for Essa Badjie, he should resign because what the country needs is internal security “but anytime you watch the TV, all you see is murder. Modou Sanyang should also resign because anytime we invite them to cover our event, they always run away. If they want to strengthen Jammeh’s presidency, we are telling them that we are not happy with Jammeh’s presidency”. He said if Essa Badjie says he will not give them permit to hold rallies, and Modou Sanyang says he will not feature their programmes, “we are telling them that no government stays in power forever”.
Femi Peters said they have been made to eat rotten eggs by the IGP when it is their constitutional right to hold rallies. Femi’s comments came in the wake of a hullabaloo that erupted after the police came to the meeting grounds and requested from the campaigners their permit to hold rally.
