May Allah help this lady. This is really tragic.
------------------- Cosmetic Surgery Leaves Woman Brain Dead By Stephanie Tweito Jacob
A registered nurse and mother-of-three is brain dead and on life support after encountering complications from an anti-cellulite treatment at a Florida medical spa on Friday.
Rohie Kah, 37, is believed to have had one of two treatments at Weston MedSpa in Weston, Florida: carboxytherapy, a procedure where carbon dioxide gas is injected below the skin to reduce the look of cellulite or stretch marks; or a "light liposuction" procedure, which is performed with only the local anesthetic lidocaine, not general anesthesia.
"The only thing that is remotely similar to what we understand [Kah] told her friend she was going to have is what they advertise on their web site as 'Carboxytherapy,'" Michael Freedland, one of Kah's lawyers, told ABC News.
But the attorney for Dr. Omar J. Brito Marin, the physician who did the procedure, claims Kah had liposuction. "She went in for a routine liposuction ... performed by Dr. Brito without any complications until the very end, at which time Dr. Brito immediately administered emergency care and called 911," attorney Brian Bieber told the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
AOL Health called Dr. Anthony Youn, a board-certified plastic surgeon in the metro Detroit area who focuses on cosmetic surgery to weigh-in. "If she just had carboxytherapy -- which is a fringe procedure that is not FDA-approved -- it would be very difficult to understand why that would cause actual death," said Youn. "But any time liposuction is done, lidocaine is used and it's possible to overdose on lidocaine, which can cause a sudden cardiac event and cause someone to die."
A risk factor, beyond those typically associated with any plastic surgery treatment, says Youn, is the person performing it. Brito is not board-certified or trained in anesthesia or plastic surgery, but is instead said to have a background in occupational medicine.
"That changes everything," Youn says. "You have someone who isn't certified administer the anesthetic, which can increase the chance that it will cause an allergic reaction, problems with breathing, or lead to an overdose and be fatal," he says.
If that same doctor is performing liposuction, Youn says severe bleeding could occur as a result of an incomplete understanding of the anatomy or by performing too much lipo. "In this situation, it'd likely be an anesthetic complication, but we can only speculate."
"If you look at these types of tragic situations, similar to that of Kayne West's mom, none of these surgeons is board certified by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons," Youn says. "This doctor has no business performing plastic surgery. That'd be like me trying to perform cardiac surgery."
Furthermore, the Weston MedSpa is licensed as an electrology facility, which does cover the services listed on their web site, according to the ABC report. Liposuction, however, is not included on the company's Web site or downloadable brochure.
Kah is currently in a coma at the Cleveland Clinic in Weston where she was taken after she became unresponsive, according to her attorneys. The Broward County Sheriff's Office, which responded to the call for help Friday afternoon at the spa, is investigating the case.
