Political opponents are often good in pointing out flaws of incumbents, and few are actually good in clearly providing an explanation of viable alternatives.
What an electorate need to see and make an inform decision is for those aspiring to replace the status quo to clearly lay down their vision.
In an exclusive interview with Darboe, he rose to the occasion and provided what could be regarded as one of his best arguments to replace the status quo.. Whether that is the true picture presented in this interview or not is upto the readers to decide.
"We report you decide" check the link below:

What are your thoughts of the interview? Give us your feedback negative or positive we take it in good faith...
Cheers

Thanks Dbaldeh for a great interview. I am particularly impressed by Darboe's new more personalized (micro)campaign strategy of targeting small(interest) groups. This could be very effective in some contexts where big rallies have limited reach and effect. However, I have seen you refered to UDP several times as UPD, I was wondering if the party's name has changed... Thanks again for the brilliant interview. |

Kay, i think that should work with more educated but less engage people. Darbo has manifest a willing strategy and also a bolder approach to issues on the ground. |

Baldeh et al,
The term limit is of special interest to me. This is the only way to stop breeds of dictatorship in Africa. If you look at the history of coups, they come to play because someone is hanging his/her tentacles to power and unwilling to go. I bet you, if Mandella of South Africa didn't leave the time he left, power would have intoxicated him to the brim..(God forbid!) I tell you what: Mandella was wise to leave.
I do not know why African leaders (SOME) thinks they are the only legitimate sons or that they are the only ones capable. I for one do not aspire political leadership now or in the future (till i die) but I beg to those that do to keep a close eye on over-staying in power. The more the leaders stay in power to rectify little wrongs or cover their skeletal nibs, the more they do the damage.
Congrats to Darboe for the exclusive, especially in this blessed month of fasting. If the public reaction is encouraging, we will (inshallahu) summon a follow-up interview with Darboe.

Kayjatta, my apology for the typo... for some reason my fingers just interchange UDP for UPD. I am guilty as charged and I remember making this same error here before.
We will make the corrections if they are in the interview text... Thanks for the compliments and it mostly goes to Darboe.
I must admit I was extremely impressed with Darboe's enthusiasm and confidence during the Interview... I particular love his response when he said "Being polite does not mean being weak" I have been critical of his soft sidedness but I think he has won me over once again. Brilliant no doubt... |

If he sticks with all that he has said in this interview, I will consider going to the Gambia and vote for him (if I can find my Gambian passport and ID to register for voting. But I guess my birth cert. will do... ). I have voted for him before in 1996... However, Darboe seemed to be too confident about the vetting power of the National Assembly. Because of its composition, which always favors the ruling party due to the number of nominated members and the President's control over the fate of National Assembly members', the National Assembly will always be a rubber-stamping institution. The new Darboe government must remove these obstacles to the true independence of the National Assembly... |

I hate to agree with Moe but he is absolutely right when he said it is too late to try to unseat APRC in 2011. The most any opposition party can do is try to win more seats in parliament. With all the empty rhetoric on line Gambians are not serious about their political future. |

Okay let me explain Moe, and I hope this is English, not Chinese or Japanese . In 1996, barely two years after the 1994 coup I had enormous respect and highly favorable perception of Darboe as an incredible politician who was in a unique position to defeat the military government of Yahya Jammeh. Shortly after the announcement of his candidature, Darboe attracted a following that immediately surpassed every opposition party in the field. In 1996, like many Gambians at the time, I was thinking in practical terms: what was the most plausible way to remove Jammeh and the newly formed military-backed APRC party? Many Gambians in that year, 1996, considered Darboe (widely known as an accomplished attorney, a human rights defender, and a man of high moral standing) and the UDP as the most serious contender against the military government. In short, in the eyes of many Gambians, the real chance of saving the country from the tyranny of military rule lied in Darboe and the UDP. Darboe and the UDP, no doubt, benefitted in terms of votes from this thought. Many who would have otherwise voted for the smaller opposition parties ended up voting for UDP instead. I was one of such people and I said it here before. You would probably notice that since losing that 1996 presidential election, Darboe and UDP's share of the electoral votes has consistently declined. This could be partly due to the return of such "experimental voters" to their original parties of affiliation. UDP's loss in that first election shattered all hopes of ending the military rule. Therefore, everyone simply returned home to their original parties. Even the defunct PPP, NCP, and others attempted to regroup. Dr. Saine had argued in his 1995 paper on the military regime in the Gambia that the image problem with Darboe (UDP) was partly attributed to the fact that he was largely viewed as "restorationist". That is one who intends to restore Jawara's old order, because Darboe perhaps did not sufficiently distance himslef and his party from Jawara and the PPP. Dr. Saine is not only a remarkable scholar, he is also a remarkably humble, friendly, and generous person who is concerned about people everywhere. I am extremely privileged to have his friendship over the course of many years. In 1994, when the military struck, I was just an idealist young teacher. My uncle used to mock that "if you pay a 'kid' thousands of Dalasis every month, and he has no wife or kids to take care of; why wouldn't he do what he is not supposed to do?" I was no kid in 1994, but I welcome the military intervention with euphoria, just like many Gambians did at the time. I was fed up with the PPP hegemony. When Jammeh spoke back in July 1994 about "rampant corruption,..., accountability, transparency, probity, and good governance", he was speaking straight from my mind. My next door neighbor, who built a sizeable wealth because of his connections to Ousainou Njie, the brother-in-law of Jawara, and the PPP still asks me: what did I tell you about these military boys?". This man whom I have spent many weekends together over 'attaya' and American movies is literally destroyed my the AFPRC government. He lost his bank job, all his assets gradually disappeared, and he had to report to the police every week even though he was never been charged of any wrong doing. Sadly Jammeh betrayed the cause, and I , like many Gambians withdrew our support. I have gone home to my original party of affiliation-PDOIS/NADD. But not all is well in PDOIS/NADD. There are things I am not happy with in PDOIS/NADD and I talk openly about those too. Jammeh betrayed the cause, and along the way he has damaged too many innocent people, and transformed himself into the new Joseph Stalin... In real life people are not flat characters, we are often round characters, to use a literary analogy. We flip flop a little bit. Julius Nyerere put it this way: "only God and fools do not change", but it was the Greek philosopher who perhaps said it more succintly: "you cannot step in the same river twice"... Thanks. |
