It will be very hard for any parent to have your child’s leg amputated at a very young age and specially being a talented footballer. The lowest part of North Zealand football player Jonathan Richter’s left leg has been amputated. He was hit by a bolt of lightning on 20th July 2009 during football training match and had been in coma for some time. The 24 year old professional football midfielder has a Gambian father and Danish mother and is team mate with his twin brother Simon Richter.
My deepest sympathy goes to his father IT and the rest of the family.
FC Nordsjælland player’s leg amputated Published 01.09.09 09:18
FC Nordsjælland footballer Jonathan Richter has had his lower left leg amputated. Richter was struck by lighting during a football match at Hvidovre stadium on 20 July. Team medics restarted his heart before he was rushed to hospital where doctors put him in an induced coma for a week to allow his body to recover and stabilise. Doctors successfully woke Richter from his medically-induced coma and confirmed he had suffered no brain damage. But the damage to his left leg was so extensive it had to be amputated. The decision to amputate was taken in agreement with Richter. In a message from his family on the FC Nordsjælland website, they said that his leg had been badly damaged by the lightning strike and once removed Richter would be able to leave intensive care. ‘Jonathan’s progress means a lot to the Richter family, friends and all involved with FC Nordsjælland, but the family now request that all continue to respect the peace that Jonathan needs in the future as he faces tough rehabilitation,’ read the message on the website.
