Editorial: Charity Should Begin at Home
It is worth commending the government of The Gambia and its people for donating a handsome amount of $700,000 to the people of Taiwan as a token for the affected victims whose properties perished and in some cases lives lost.
Small and poor as we are, we are able to give to people who have always been giving us. The relationship between the two countries has always been cordial since the coming up of the AFFPRC/APRC governments.
One cannot imagine how much money our Taiwanese friends gave us, whether it is in the agricultural, health, educational or construction sectors. There is no doubt that the Taiwanese people and government are far richer than us and it was on those lines that our relationship has been one of a giver and a taker, off course the Gambia the taker and they the giver.
However our government’s decision to donate such a huge sum of money to them clearly demonstrated that The Gambia though small and poor, has the heart of a lion. We want to believe that the people behind the idea of donating such an amount need commendation. I want to be convinced that the idea comes from the President of the republic. Listening to the bulletins on both the radio and television, one will not be clear as who actually donated the $700.000. Is it the President or the government of The Gambia? What is clear is that the money is coming from The Gambia to the Taiwanese people.
Well done it’s been a good job. As the typhoon victims are suffering from calamity of that magnitude in Taiwan, back home here we have our own flood victims. How much attention are they receiving from loved ones, municipalities, and other local government authorities? Yes there was a time when the office of the vice president could be seen dishing out cheques amounting to a global figure of one million dalasis to our regional governors for onward transmission to affected victims of flood in their respective regions.
The amount of damage that the floods have caused within this month alone is alarming. We have seen television footages where compounds sank in flood waters in the North Bank Region, the Central River Region, the Western Region, and The Kanifing Municipality. The amount of damage is outrageous. The number of people who suffered from such calamity cannot be quantified as at now. Looking at the latest television footages showing the Kotu areas under the Kanifing Municipality and that of the Brikama area, the flood is just horrible.
These Gambians are far from consoled as most of them are still living under the roofs of schools and other community owned shelters. These people need immediate assistance, and real assistance for that matter. The one million dalasis contribution from the vice president’s office are not enough to take care of their suffering. I want to believe that the $700.000 which is equivalent to about 18.9milion dalasis would have been a better assistance for our victims than those of the Taiwanese for just a few reasons.
The Taiwanese are far better off than us financially, a fact which cannot be denied. That is why since our relationship with them has always been pumping in money to our various development sectors, it would have made sense if the $700.000 the equivalence of (D18.9m) was shared among our own victims and the one million dalasi be sent to Taiwan to show our appreciation and sympathy for their Typhoon victims. Who needs the $700,000, our flood victims or the Taiwanese victims?

This is the African problem Karamba ,and this is exactly why ya'll end up in jails and people wonder .Let me enlighten you once again ,The question is should jammeh give money to Gambians that suffered the same fate as their taiwanese friends or is it more important to give it back to taiwan, 3 months ago they gave the Gambia Government 500,000 dollars and we reciprocated by giving them 700 in times of their need. you do the math now and tell me how much they really gave to Taiwan 200,000 dollar exactly ,How long do you think a friendship based on one giver is gonna last or do you think we should be the sorry neighbour that just takes and never gives . This has nothing absolutely to do with thief this looter that and all your nonsense ,the difficult villager in you is out again bro try to get it right atleast sometimes.....................................Peace |

It is easy for people to call one another friends, but a true and genuine friend is always easily reorganized, as it is only such a friend that will stand by you in times of need. That genuine friendship is exactly what exists between The Gambia and the Republic of Taiwan. The assistance rendered by The Gambia to the victims of the recent typhoon that struck the Republic of Taiwan, should not come as a surprise to anyone who knows the history of the bilateral ties between the two countries.
Since The Gambia re-established diplomatic ties with Taiwan in 1995, the two countries have been in pursuit of common objectives. Since then, Taiwan has been instrumental in accomplishing the development drive of the country. Their contribution in the field of agriculture, education, health, science and technology and now security cannot be over emphasized.
It is therefore no surprise that The Gambia is reciprocating such gesture. The contribution of US$700,000 by The Gambia to the relief of the disaster in Taiwan is indeed timely and also illuminates the reality of President Jammeh’s strong commitment to strengthening south-south ties. Development, in essence, is our commitment in our countries and indeed in the global community; of our resources and knowledge, to ensure the creation of a world free of fear and want; where every human being has all opportunities to grow and contribute to his or her fullest potential and also effectively participate in decision making.
It is to such participatory approach to development that The Gambia and Taiwan are committed, hence their determination to engendering genuine cooperation. It is the ambition of President Jammeh to ensure that The Gambia and the developing nations at large emancipate themselves from poverty and underdevelopment through their own available means.
This explains the strong ties between The Gambia and many of the developing countries Taiwan in particular. Ever since the two countries embraced each other, Taiwan has never relented in proving to The Gambia that it is a true and genuine partner. We wish to seize this opportunity to wish the people of Taiwan a speedy recovery from the shackles of the typhoon. Author: Daily Observer

I think it makes sense for the Gambia to extend a helping hand to Taiwanese victims of recent flooding. It is not really the money, it is the goodwill that matters. Taiwan has been the "World Bank" of the AFPRC/APRC regime almost from day one... However, the proper thing is that Jammeh should have followed the law and the procedure in giving out such finacial assistance. It should be disclosed that the money is coming out of the government's covers, instead of the impression that Jammeh is the one donating to Taiwan. It appears very improper for the President to donate his personal money to a foreign country on behalf of the Gambia. The person and the personal must be separated from the state. Another point is that Jammeh and the government should have matched the hansome donation made to Taiwan with adequate assistance to the flood victims back home in Ebo Town and Jeshwang among others... I am sure if these proper ways were followed, Gambians will not be bothered about assisting Taiwan, a country that has bankrolled their every development project. Gambians are generous people; afterall they have toiled on Jammeh's 'hundreds' of farms around the country without pay ... |
