I have just returned from Gambia, for me the place felt tired, as a tourist some of its is dated, especially if you stay in the senegambia area. bumsters, taxi drivers, attitude overall it just felt tired. Being ripped off and being approached is tiresome. I stayed in Baku, a couple who went out and used a Green taxi got ripped off, 250 dls to westfield, they were annoyed, but the Yellow taxis allow it to happen. Senegambia, up from karibar hotel, opposite the cash point used to but quiet, empty land now its full of green taxis and their drivers and a long line of bumsters who are very verbal. They are loud and ugly, if you want to leave the hotel and walk to the top to go to the market it is a hassle. For me I can leave and go somewhere else but for the new comer what a sight, it is no wonder they use the hotel facilities. Prices correct me if I am wrong, years ago 50 dls to the pound mean a 300 dls for meal - £6.00, now 35 to the £1 = £8.50 for a meal you do the maths it can add up. Most of the tourists I met were on a bed and breakfast basis. Some felt Gambia was not a cheap destination, and remember they are not drinking or eating at top end restaurants but on the senegambia drag. The tours expensive they paid £59.00 to go to Senegal tothe rainforest to see white rhino and other animals, all the GE, but not to local tour operators/guides. Roots tours still expensvie £40 per person. Come on guys treat the tourist (cash person) properly, THEY DO TALK TO OTHER, news travels fast. I can find a local place and save the pennies but I still end up spending a lot of money. ALSO IT COSTS A FORTUNE TO GET THERE, GE monopoly, do not get me started on that one. for gambia to have a drop of 32% in tourist numbers hits hard. SO PEOPLE WHAT IS THE SOLUTION

The American market opt for Ghana rather than Gambia a number of US visitors attend the roots festival but the standards of the higher end market are not up to standard. There are links trying to be forged between a few US uni and the UTG but progress is always slow. I don't think the birth of AI will stop tourist leaving the hotels but o course will impact local bars/restaurants etc.
Jambo for me the problem lies with no vision and a mentality of many of live today never thinking about tomorrow.

Hit it right on the nail there sister when you say; "Jambo for me the problem lies with no vision and a mentality of many of live today never thinking about tomorrow." But don't forget that many of these folks just survive from day to day so its natural if you have something today then that's great,God will provide tomorrow.
