Jammin, As titled this event was organised at New Jeshwang town in the Gambia. Mike Bennett is American and a former jazz drummer who studied sabar with the Janha family(Bai Janha's family). I even know one of the dancers and some of the drummers at the event. Enjoy. |

The lack of response to my post, from the male population here, made me curious. I ask myself whether I had done something wrong and thus embarked on a bit of research regarding this Sabar dance.
My findings are that the Dance is an expression of femininity and sexuality which Islam frown upon. Women are suppose to be modest, and public expression of ones femininity and sexuality can be construed as loose. The girl in this particular video exhibited great talent at the dance and therefore great talent in her expression. Usually vocal men, on wide ranging issues, are eerily silent on this one. It could have been a good opportunity to educate " Internet tourist" on another part of The Gambian Culture. |

| What you have discovered in your research Jammin to me shows that men and women are still seperate and are not integrated in the social culture of Gambia, whereas in the "West" that is not so, both join in and enjoy themselves and do things together. Which system is best cannot be decided such systems have grown up over time and been integrated into culture and are therefore right in different cultures.Did your research explain why one girl gave money to another girl? (as shown in the clip ) |

No. However I would venture to believe, that it was a show of appreciation and an acknowledgment of the dancer's prowess. Also notice that they had place a red shawl around her, to my mind, indicating a crowning. I may be totally wrong in this my initial belief, but should I find something more concrete I will let you know. An aside: The Dance is noticeably similar( in some respect) to the dances performed by Jamaican females in the Dancehall sessions.
