Friday, 19 December 2008 MRC Gambia Folks, i am puzzle as to the role of MRC in the Gambia. People are flooding that research base daily and they are dying there. Is it a hospital like RVH or just providing an extra service to Gambian population? This needs to be assertained. People start lining the compound as early as 3am in the morning, if not you cannot have any space to sit. folks before our people die due untrain doctors, someone need to clarify the situation. MRC is a charity and is not suppose to treat people as far i know, so why are people going there for treatment?

Why are people going to MRC,? simple my friend The best quality medical care available in the Gambia for free,RVH pharmacy is frequently suffering a stock shortage, whilst there is no shortage of stock in the private pharmacies to fill RVH doctors prescription paper,if you have no cash to buy medicines you have a big problem.Should Gambians not go to MRC? You say
"MRC is a charity and is not suppose to treat people as far i know, so why are people going there for treatment?" Ask a Gambian without money having health problems that need treating if he agrees with your question above. |

MRC is definitely one of the best medical institutions in the Gambia and I believe the reason people go there is because of the services they get there for free. What else?
Gambian scientists at MRC are among the best researchers in the world who are trying to find the cure of malaria.

Santafara, the need to get to the MRC at 3am is not about places to sit, but the ticket allocation to be seen by a doctor. There is ample seating. MRC use to see around 170 outpatients patients each morning session and you were able to get there around 6am. All has changed in the past couple of years and the ticket allocation to see a doctor has been halved, hence the need to get there earlier and earlier. I was there just three weeks back with two patients, after taking your place in the queue at the new back entrance you are counted thru as tickets are handed out at around 4.45am. by security. One of my patients (a friend) used MRC at least ten years ago so this system and the health care facilities is nothing new, only the allocation. Sadly my friend has passed away.
X-ray registration cost 25Dalasi. Fast & excellent registration facilities. I saw two pharmacies. Medication is free. Patients must eat something before taking on-the-spot medication. Follow up appointment procedures are good. Food is available from vendors outside back entrance.
Another patient I took had been coughing since Feb when I was in The Gambia, as some know I have made other visits during the year and her cough got worse as time went on. So this time around she agreed to be seen at MRC.Ten days after taking her medication she no longer has the cough that was attacking her about every twenty seconds. She kept her follow up appointment on 4th Dec and has another beg of January 2009.
MRC and Dr David Conway (Malaria dept) work closely with staff at Farrefenni Clinic also, but I don’t know whether the consultation and medication is free. I was lucky enough to sit next to Dr Conway’s wife en-route back to Gatwick couple of years back listening to his personal education studies etc., he sounds a very dedicated young man.
With regard to the professional qualifications of the doctors, have you ever glanced at the requirements when MRC advertise a vacancy? It is second to none.. regards, sab. |

Hi all,
For all we can ascertain, MRC is among the best medical research institutions. They pay their staffs well (Infact way better) and continually provides employment for Gambians.
As rightly noted by Uncle Suntou, the notion (a general misleading unsubstantiated concept) has been on for a very long time, but it actually lacks substance. It was rumored that they do 'try-n-error' on Gambians, i.e. to say they test medicinal values on people, resulting in their timely deaths. It is one of the discussions you can hear people gossip about MRC in many vous. The truth is it is not substantiated, more or less, the usual emergence of taboo-ing beliefs, the same way some mysteries of taboos cannot be explained in our today's world. A cousin of mine who worked there before said good things about MRC.
On the side of HIV Aids, MRC must be commended for the good job. Gambian doctors like Kora/Cora are very respected and have mastery of their jobs.
I believe they are cheaper too compared to many other centers. So MRC better be there, and it better live longer...
Rgds, Dalton

You say MRC is a charity. Who funds it?
I understood it did alot of preventative work with innoculations of children. Is that correct? |

"Established in The Gambia in 1947, MRC (UK) The Gambia is the UK’s single largest investment in medical research in a developing country. The unit’s research focuses on infectious diseases of immediate concern to The Gambia and the continent of Africa, with the aim of reducing the burden of illness and death in the country and the developing world as a whole.
The research programme of the unit spans basic scientific research (immunology, microbiology, virology and molecular biology), clinical studies, large epidemiological studies and intervention trials. The field and laboratory-based work draws on excellent research and clinical facilities and attracts international funding."
