This from the DO
http://observer.gm/africa/gambia/article/2008/9/4/adulterated-palm-oil-in-sk-market

The department of health can really do a good job here and prevent illness, those responsible must be dealt with.

I think the complainants have jumped the gun here. She needs to first report the matter to "Food and Hygiene" instead of the Daily Observer. This is a technical matter that "Food and Hyegene" is better positioned to investigate and give an enlightened advice to the public. Daily Observer will only fuel speculation and public anxiety. Has anybody been reported sick from consuming this product? What kind of sickness are they talking about? Is this palm oil more "contaminated" and dangerous than Jammeh's concoctions?
The complainants (from the APRC, I mean "Operation No Compromise", doesn't that sound like APRC? ) should be responsible enough and do all of us a favor by telling the nation where (what location in the Serekunda market)and from whom they purchased the "adulterated" product from?
I am not a food expert, and I certainly do not want to sound here like a defense attorney (because I am not one)but palm oil can come in different grades and qualities, yet that may not mean "adulteration" or contamination.
Unless proper investigations are done and expert opinions are sought, this kind speculation by the Daily Observer can only hurt small businesses in the Gambia ...

Kay, I agree with some of what you say,BUT unless I am mistaken "food and Hygene" are a little unlikely to take any firm action when approached by a single complainant, she would probably have been given platitudes and sent on her way,a piece in the DO well thats a different matter it highlights the work done by the "food and hygene" and firm action will result. The matter of confirming the adulteration or contamination is also vital and should be put in hand by "food and hygene" at once.To alert shoppers to the allegations is also important and will hurt small vendors in the short term but that is far better than to have many of the population ill. After testing a press release from "health and hygene" explaining the result of the tests should be made.I can remember several years ago the Italians had a similar problem with adulterated olive oil and many were sick, i cannot remember any details though.
