Scientists find diabetes gene

A team of Danish and Japanese researchers have found a genetic link to type 2 diabetes A Danish-Japanese research team has proven that type 2 diabetes is hereditary by discovering a gene which increases the risk of developing the illness....

The gene is found in 40 percent of the Danish population.

Oluf Borbye Pedersen, one of the researchers from the Steno Diabetes Center in Gentofte, said the gene can increase the risk of developing the illness among people who have a poor diet and do very little exercise.

The researchers expect that a genetic test for the disease will be a realistic possibility in the next 10 to 15 years.

'With a gene test, the extent of the condition will decrease on a personal level, because people will be more motivated to change their lifestyle so they don't develop the disease,' said Pedersen.

Type 2 diabetes has often been associated with a poor diet and an inactive lifestyle.

Allan Flyvbjerg, the head of the Danish Diabetes Association, said he was delighted that now results show a genetic link to type 2 diabetes.

'It’s not always somebody's own fault if they get type 2 diabetes. The fact that the disease can be prompted by an unhealthy lifestyle means, that with the possibility of a genetic test, people will be able to keep the condition at bay by eating healthily and doing more exercise.'

The team's results have been published in science journal Nature.

Toubab, diabetes is one of the most common deseases in Gambia now. I don't know the reason for this but perhaps those in the medical field could enlighten us.

I have seen people with diabetes who were green tea (Ataya) drinkers.
