US PRAISE DEFENSE PARTNERSHIP WITH GAMBIA
The U.S. States Department has described its Security Partnership with The Gambia as “satisfactory.” The partnership took a concrete form last month when military officials from the Stuttgart-based US. European Command, EUCOM, visited the Gambia. The EUCOM, which is responsible for US military partnerships with Sub-Saharan Africa, organized the visit together with the US embassy in Banjul and the Office of US Defense Cooperation in the US Embassy in Dakar, neighboring Senegal. US Ambassador in the Gambia Joseph Stafford had said that the meeting between EUCOM officials and members of the Gambia Army dealt with counter terrorism and military preparedness against piracy and illegal fishing. Many, however, believe that the growing US interest in that sub-region’s increasing importance as a future source of oil. The Gambia is considered by the US as a partner in its global war on terror. The Gambia regularly arrests people of Middle Eastern origin visiting the country as terror suspects. Most of them are later found to be innocent and observers believe the over zealousness on the side of the Gambian authorities is done to win US favors. The Gambia gets only about US$100 000 to US$150 000 of military assistance from the US annually.
The above piece is copied from thegambiajournal.con paper. Does this mean that the US is lending its support to jammeh's current affairs with the Gambia.
I invite your humble opinions on this matter.
