District Chiefs Sacked
By Fabakary B. Ceesay

Confirmed reports reaching Foroyaa indicate that three chiefs were sacked by the authorities, within a period of one week. The chiefs of Sami, Central and Upper Baddibu districts were recently relieved of their duties.

Foroyaa confirmed that Chief Sambujang Jagne of Upper Baddibu and Kabiro Kanteh of Central Baddibu districts were all sacked by the authorities. Reports also indicate that the replacement of the two chiefs was with effect from Friday 18 April. Sources also confirmed that chief Moro Jawla of Sami district was also sacked with effect from Tuesday 22 April. It was revealed that Chief Samboujang Jagne of Upper Baddibu was replaced by Mr. Foday Sarr Jammeh of Illiasa, a son of the former traditional chief, Mama Tamba Jammeh, chief Kabiro Kanteh of Central Baddibu is replaced by Momodou Kenda Dibba of Salikenni, while Moro Jawla of Sami district was replaced by Kebo Leigh of Sami Panchonki.

Foroyaa spoke to Governor Edwarr Seckan of North Bank Region who confirmed the termination of the services of the two Baddibu chiefs and their replacements. Foroyaa also spoke to ex-chief Moro Jawla, who confirmed his sacking. Jawla said he received his termination letter, dated Tuesday 22 April, at around 4:00pm. He noted that the letter was brought to him by members of the Gambia Police Force (Police Intervention Unit). Jawla stated that before he received the letter, he received a phone call from Governor Nganjie Touray who informed him of his sacking. He said Governor Touray told him that a fax letter came from the local government department indicating that he has been removed from his position. He said that the letter did not indicate any wrong doing he might have committed to warrant his sacking. Governor Touray could not be reached for comments on the sacking of Moro Jawla.

It could be recalled that chief Moro Jawla was elected as a chief through the ballot box in November 2000, whilst the two sacked Baddibu Chiefs were appointed on political tickets.

On the other hand ,Santa ;don't you think it is good that such crude measures are taken against certain chiefs or individuals who had hitherto been known die hard supporters so they too taste the bitter pill. We have read about the likes of Moro sending opposition supporters to be pilloried by the paramilitary or P.I.U officers during a recent election, now that he is vomited by the system he can face up to reality. My grand mother told me that lessons at times are learned from other's mistakes but the hardest lesson is one learned from a personal perspective . Those who gain by climbing on the shoulders of others should remember that they may very well find the same people on their way down.
