Jokadu Alkalo Sacked

Information reaching Foroyaa has it that the Alkalo of Bantanding Wollof, in the Jokadu District of the North Bank Region, Mr. Matarr Jallow, is sacked with effect from Monday 14 April. The termination letter, which was signed by Governor Edward Seckan, was handed over to Mr Jallow by the Jokadou District Chief, Jim Fatma Jobe.
According to Ousman Jallow, a son to the Alkalo, the termination letter issued to his father was physically brought by Chief, himself, who also asked him to surrender the Alkaloship materials, including the village stamp. The son said that to their surprise, a cousin brother to his father, Mr. Alkali Jallow, was declared as the village Alkalo by the same Chief, who handed over the Alkaloship materials to him. He said that the appointment of Mr. Alkali Jallow, as the village head, could bring a friction within their extended family and the village.
The son explained that his father has inherited the position of Alkaloship, almost ten (10) years ago, and that it was their fore-fathers who founded the village; that succession to the position of Alkalo was based on who is the eldest in the family.
The concerned son, who was an independent candidate during the 2007 National Assembly and the 2008 Local Government Elections, alleged that his father’s sacking is politically motivated.
The Chief of Jokadu confirmed the sacking of Alkalo Matarr Jallow, which, he said, took immediate effect, but was also quick to point out that the termination letter was from the office of the Divisional Governor, who appended his signature on it. He said that the letter contains the facts dealing with the sacking of the Alkalo.
However, Governor Edward Seckan refused to comment on the matter and directed this reporter to the Department of State for Local Government and Lands.
Several attempts were made to contact the Permanent Secretary, but he was said to be out of the jurisdiction.

| In hind sight, perhaps the son should have been more careful about the 'political sensitivities'and norms of the area before running as an independent. I bet if he knew it may cost the father 'his' alkaloship he probably would have reconsidered. In any case, every decision nowadays, particularly at the local level is political. I am really sympathetic to his situation. |
