Five Security Detainees Escape By Yaya Dampha
The office of the Inspector General of Police has on Tuesday 4th April, 2006, issued a press release, informing the general public that during the process of transferring some of the suspected March 21st coup plotters to Janjabureh Prisons in CRD, the former NIA Director General together with four others, managed to escape. Among those who escaped, according to the release, are Lt Ebou Low, 2nd Lt. Alieu Ceesay, Regimental Sergent Major Alpha Bah and Staff Sergent Malafi Corr. According the release, the vehicle in which they were being transported entered into a ditch and almost somersaulted. The five men are still said to be at large and believed to be on the run, the release noted. The cooperation of the general public in volunteering any information that would lead to the arrest of these fugitives has been sought for by the IGP's office. The IGP has also reminded the general public that any person(s) who harbours or renders any assistance to these suspects is/are liable of an offence and would be dealt with accordingly. The general public according to the press release was assured that there was no cause for alarm as the situation is under control.
When contacted by our reporter, the Police PRO, Inspector Aziz Bojang, was asked to say where the said accident had occurred and whether the suspects were under escort and was further asked what happened to the escorts that gave these people the chance to escape them. Responding to our reporter, PRO Bojang said he could not know where the accident had happened and the fate of the escorts. He however promised to call back our reporter and inform him accordingly. When contacted the army PRO Lt. Lamin Gano said "I don't know where the said accident happened" He said the escorts had the opportunity to shoot at them when they tried to run but he said he does not know why the escorts missed that opportunity. I had contacted Police stations from Banjul to Fula Banta to enquire about reports of the purported accident but no reports were made to these stations.
In a separate development the Former Director of NIA Abdoulie Kujabi was seen by our reporter on Tuesday at the RVTH under heavy escort. Mr. Kujabi appeared to be in a critical physical condition. It is also brought to the notice of Foroyaa that. Captain Pierre Mendy is also said to be in a similar condition. When our reporter asked the army PRO he said he does not know the physical well being of the detainees and that it is not his duty to say how their conditions are.
Comment The press release of the Police raises a lot of questions that need to be clarified by the authorities.
SIX ARMY OFFICERS RELEASED By Yaya Dampha
Six army officers and soldiers, who were among those arrested for allegedly taking part in the March 21 abortive coup plot, were released during the weekend. The released army officers and soldiers include Lieutenant Commander M.B Sarr, Major Sainey Bayo, commanding officer 2nd Infantry Battalion, Captain Y.N.A Jallow, Lieutenant Savage, commander military police, Sergeant Abdoulie Sanyang, and Private Lamin Sonko, a driver. When contacted, Lieutenant Lamin Gano, the Army Public Relations Officer, confirmed the release of the men and said that it is because of their innocence in the ploy to overthrow the president. He said during their investigations if one is arrested, he or she would be investigated and once found innocent, shall be freed. The freed soldiers and officers are said to be back on their normal duties. It is not clear whether those commanding their units will still be back at their command post. This is the second time that those detained in connection with the coup plot have been released. Earlier on, Captain Nfamara Jammeh and Major Ebrima M. Bah were released for lack of evidence linking then to the coup plot.

What a funny world .Kujabi of all people with all the powers and priviledges is now escorted and "appeared to be in a critical physical condition". What goes around comes around. Just like Ali Mazuri said, " if they come for me during the nignt and you keep quiet, they will come for you during the day".
It is a wakeup call for those in power to understand that the tides can change anytime and they should make that it finds them on the right side. |

Basiru, injustice is injustice to progress in our questfor decency and Gambian progress, even the prisoner deserve justice. I am very sadden by your comments because its very unprinciple, its like applying the rule on lottery bases. Part of the struggle today in Gambia is not to eliminate the likes of Kujabi's but rather help educate them, let them see the effects of their terror and injustice on other people. You are advocating revenge, its very sweet, it gives you temporary smiles but equally counter productive and has only one results bitterness. All those in prison or detention today deserve justice not measured justice, they are not guilty until proven otherwise that atleast is the law. In all fairness, i did not prosecute Kujabi. What i have said is very clear is that he was in a position of influence and to see him paraded as a crimainal is a wakeup call to all. I do not see anything wrong in that line of discussion. As to whether he was guilty or not is not for me but for those who have arrested him to come up with evidence that he is infact gulity.
May be you need to read my posting again. It is very harmless and only a warning to those entrusted with authority to utilise it for the advancement of the society. Infact my posting is about educating just as you said that we need to educate the likes of Kujabi. |

One thing we all have to bear in mind, whatever one does will boomerang back on to you. When you point, the big finger always points back at you.
Every body should take responsibility for what they do. If you have a relative, friend, co-worker etc and you know that they are involved in wrong doings, you should tell them the truth and hard fact that what they are doing is WRONG and they should give it up. Otherwise tomorrow when it is their turn to suffer, we should not be disappointed if other people point out their past deeds. I personally for God shake do not want to see any one for that matter to suffer.
All those people executing yaya's evil orders are gambians and they have relatives, friends etc who in one way or the other know what they are doing. Why would we not give brotherly advises to our love ones not to harm other people's love ones? WHY? |

Very interesting but what if one does not have a relative or friend in Jammeh's govt. I have no directive relative in Jammeh's govt, infact i have very little acquitances within the top brass of govt and no family members what so ever, so i suppose that means i have nothing to worry becuause I'm remote from Jammeh's effects.
"When people have a brutal govt regime, its likely to create brutal minds devoid of reason and sensibility, the winner in such a situation can only be the dictator. To achieve moral ends we mush use moral means, other wise the ends will come back to hunt our us". For the Gambia is our home land. |

Somita, then use those little acquaintances you have and do your part. If you look at Taalibeh's contribution he was listing families, friend ect becasue they may be the ones whom you feel confident and safe with. It is difficult to walk up to some on the street and start to talk to them. Every part of the gambia is represented in Government. Atleast you must have an MP in the APRC unlesss you are from Wuli, S/K East and Jarra (East/West i dont know where Kemeseng is from).
However, if you have no one you know in government, you might atleast know some one who knows someone and may be you can try it remotely. In any case there will be some way to go about it.
i rememeber some years back when MOJA was being set up in the gambia they had what was called CELLS. Each memeber was charged to recruit atleast 10 people and once that number is reached, the cell must breaks up and each one then recruits another 10. It was very effective. may be we should all use that sytem. May be it will work. It certainly scared jawara to ban the movement in the Gambia. |

My statement does not imply that everyone should talk to a member of the government or some sort. What I am trying to say is that those people in the jammeh government perpetrating horrible acts against people have got friends or relatives or at least close confidantes who know what they are involved in, these people should take it upon themselves to give good adivse.
If you have no one to talk to you keep quiet but if you have a friend that is doing wrong it does no ham to help them change. That is sincerity and honesty.
Today almost everyone is argonising about Mr Marenah's situation. Was he not heading the most fearful and abusive organisation in the Gambia at one time. He he not got genuine friends yesterday that new what his organisation was up to. Was he not advised against the performance of his unit? Did he take appropriate steps to make sure that people under investigation by his tugs are treated with respect and dignity. Wel,today it is his turn and at least we are proud of ourselves in the sense that we are condeming the government behaviour against him. This is why I said that when you point the big finger always points back at you.
All human beings are equal and the same before The ALMIGHTY ALLAH. This is a fact. We must learn to treat each other with absolute respect. There is no excuse otherwise. Simple. |

Hi brothers, Though I agree weith you talibeh and kondorong, but I think you ought to consider somita's point...(on coate)"Part of the struggle today in Gambia is not to eliminate the likes of Kujabi's but rather help educate them, let them see the effects of their terror and injustice on other people." You see most Gambians today in high positions are sick people and needs help. Some of them, despite replacing others who had fallen from grace, they think the MAN has complete confidence in them so they can now do anything(Including toturing their fellow citizens)just to please their master who they fail to realise is very very difficult to please. They only see the light when they themselves fall victims of his whip. If we tend to throw a blind eye to this fact,so many sick(not natural sickness)people will be in our midst and eventually, brutality, inhumanity and lark of respect with hatred will bread grounds and God forbods for us to have another Rwanda. We in NADD listen to professor (President)Halihpa,Sallah everyday at the people's center,He is like a university for all Gambians. When we say Jammeh must go to prison when removed for his crimes,He will tell us that the laws of the land must be respected if Jammeh is found by the laws of the land guilty of any crimes against Humanity, then the due process of law will take its cause but no one in His administration will take advantage opon a Gambian because you are at a higher position. This are the words a leader should say and practice. Sitasungo |

It is wrong to endeavour to please jammeh at the expense of the state. The interest of The Gambia should be promoted first and for most before the interest of the president.
This is nationalism and should be born in mind by any government official. Until we achieve this state of mind it will be difficult to move forward progressively.
Without being bias, I think Halifa Sallah is the best person to help us attain this level of conviction. The guy is a proper interlectual with a collossal amout of due consideration for the rule of law. The Gambia has its own Kwame Nkruma and I hope we will realise the benefits. Halifa is the most consistent political figure our country has ever seen as far as I am concern.
If you hate him do not hold any conversation with him otherwise he will change your mind. Nothing about the man is belligerent, disrespectful and or arrogant.
He is the kind of political representative I honestly yearn for the Gambia. I hope and pray that he becomes president of the Gambia sooner rather than later. |
