FED- Of Disabled President Calls for Ratification of UN Convention By Ebrima Dibbasey and Madi S. Njie
The president of the Gambia Federation of the Disabled (GFD) has promised that the newly elected GFD board will work to ensure, among other things, that the UN Convention on the Rights of the Disabled is ratified. The GFD president, Mr. Mohamed Kora, made these remarks soon after he was elected at the third GFD Congress, held on 4 and 5 April, at the GOVI Resource Centre in Kanifing. He called on the disabled to be united in pursuit of their common goals. He also urged the government, NGOs and other stakeholders to invest in the lives of the disabled. The recommendations made by the participants at the Congress include the call for a national policy on disability, the refurbishment of GFD office at Campama to cater for an office for disabled people organisations, advocacy for the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Disabled and leadership training.
The secretary of state for Health and Social welfare, Dr. Malick Njie, delivered a statement at the Congress, which was well received by the participants. He cited sections 31 and 216 of the Constitution of the Republic, which guarantee the rights and address the plight of people with disabilities. The Health and Social Welfare SoS said: “It is a tragic irony that people with disabilities are often neglected, traumatized and excluded in our homes and communities and reduced to objects of charity in the name of sympathy due to ignorance.” He therefore noted that behavioral and attitudinal changes are crucial for the success of efforts to place the disabled in the mainstream of economic activities.
See next issue for a detailed report on the Congress and the full text of Dr. Njie’s speech. The election of the new executive board was conducted by the Independent Electoral Commission.
