The Serekundanding Road Tragedy A Lesson
By Bijou Peters

The Serekundanding accident which left ten people dead on the spot and several injured, in January, was a tragedy indeed and caused much distress and horror in the entire country. The case is now in court and proceedings commenced on Monday 31 March at the Brikama Magistrates Court.

Meanwhile the road transport executive should ensure that all the large trucks carrying wood and other goods are roadworthy and their drivers adequately licensed. All vehicles and drivers that fail to meet the standards should be grounded. Road unworthy large vehicles are a danger on our narrow roads. It is a common sight to see them overloaded with goods and wood and attempting to deliver them in the centre of town by carelessly trying to maneuver their way through sharp curves along streets that are very narrow and sometimes overcrowded with pedestrians and children playing football. Our roads must be made safer to prevent avoidable accidents such as that which happened at Serekundanding. The road transport authorities should take drastic and prompt action to address the matter relating to that road accident at Serekundanding.
