Momodou,I really cannot remember the days of the week that we travelled there in 89/three more times during nineties - twice going to the vast and magnificent colourful market with unbelievable mayhem. First time we just came across it. Wherever can the thousands come from? I do know there was no tarmac road until you reached around Jufureh, on this occasion I travelled with friends. The second time I didn’t tell my husband just how bad the dirt road & holes were going to be and he agreed the journey. I don’t know if he has ever forgiven me!! I know the road conditions have improved vastly for a good deal of that route now. Must be due for another visit. Kiwi brought back too many memories.
First time we stayed at the Government Rest house – Georgetown (Jangjang-bureh) I believe it was twelve dalasi a night (the dalasi then was about 8 to the £.) I wonder if the Resthouse is still there & what is it now?
One year there was the terrible GMC? bus accident when the vehicle went into the water drowning 44? people whilst we were there.
We stayed at Baobolong during May one year – the heat unbearable for me – never again in May! (During that time also the mist was so thick in Tendaba en -route that you were unable to see the river from the camp.)
Kiwi - No not a street market - like I have seen no other like it!
Thank you Kiwi & Sister O for bringing back the lovely memories. It is about seven years since I travelled there.
