Aku-pickin your airport experience sounds rotten; you can write to the GTA and the Airport authorities and make an official complaint about the whole affair cc a copy to the new Secretary of State for Tourism Nancy Njie.
Even though you and your family had a stressful experience just contrast it with the millions of Tourists who were supposed to leave from Heathrows Terminal 5 on 27/3/08. When all the flights were cancelled to gain some perspectiveon your experience. At least you could reteurn home on a flight with all your luggage . I know it seems to be a small consolation but what a real inconvenience to lose your lounge and be stranded when all you want to do is be some where else! I don't see the whole of the world boycotting London because of it! Do you? It was such a shambolic state of affairs.
I agree that the personnel at the airport trying to bribe extortionate amounts of foreign exchange from passengers using Banjul Airport should face dismissmal. In fact I would go as far to suggest that there should be an inquiry by the National Assembly into the Tourism Sector including the Airport Authorities to find out how this sector can be run more efficiently. The inquiry should also investigate corruption within tourism sector including ticket allocation from Gambia, investigate bogus penalities and payments made to individual personnel if they can't produce a receipt for passengers.
I was glad to see some stop checking the other day at Kotu by the President on the state of the amenities there culminating in a new car park and other amenities earmarked to be built.
As for the title of this thread the root cause of the decline of tourism to Gambia. I would say the credit crutch,Fuel increases, interest rates, monopoly of Gambian Experience, a lack of monitoring and evaluation of Gambians Tourism Policy, lack of vision and not enough competent staff who actually know what they are doing are root causes to Gambia's Tourist Decline.

Sister Omega, What even surprised me about terminal 5 disaster - infact, David Cameron, the Torie leader called it a national humiliation is that Willie Walsh (BA's Chief Executive) refused to stand down. Interestingly, he was specifically assigned this project three years ago when he was first appointed. He promised to deliver it on time, within budget and flawless...but we all know what happened - more than 32 flights were cancelled and only few news channels suggested to him if he was going to consider his position. Can you imagine the negative news coverage this would have generated if it happens elsewhere? The PR exercise will probably take that airport atleast 1year to recover from such media coverage!

I bet the British government is glad BA was privatized. However I wonder how the government can actually justify the increase in airport tax with this type of shambles going on. Increased airport tax for Terminal 5 should be scraped for the time being. Having said that the winners from this fiasco can only be Heathrow residents who had been compaigning hard to get the project stopped in the beginning; at least they have been able to get at least two nights decent sleep. Hey Buba.
Peace
