Gambia Government Denies Ghanaians’ Killing Allegation By Fabakary B. Ceesay
The Department of State for Communication and Information Technology has reacted to the BBC focus on Africa report on a protest by Ghanaians over killings in The Gambia and an article carried on the Foroyaa Newspaper issue 17-18 March 2008, on the same subject.
A Press Release dispatched from the said Department of State states it could confirm that in July 2005, eight (8) bodies were found in the vicinity of Brufut-Ghana Town and not 44 bodies as reported. The release added that the nationalities of the dead bodies were not known and recalled that immediately after the discovery, the Department of State for Interior had issued a press release urging the public to assist in identifying the said bodies and to provide any other relevant information. The media release went further to say that a post-mortem was conducted on each of the 8 bodies and that the results were shared with the Ghanaian delegation that visited The Gambia in connection with the matter. The Press Release debunked the claims that the 8 were suspected coup plotters, hence the killing, and added that the allegations are utterly false.
The media release went on to say that The Gambia is known for its peace and stability and Foreigners have always enjoyed freedom and peace in the country. The release added that Ghanaians have been residing in The Gambia for the past 50 years to the point of having a town dedicated to them; that the unfortunate incident is equally a great concern to The Gambian authorities; that the investigations are still ongoing and that The Gambia and Ghana have agreed to form a joint international investigative committee to further probe into the matter.
