Drama Unfolds At Kanifing Court By Fabakary B. Ceesay
On Monday 10 March, drama unfolded at the Kanifing Magistrate Court as many passers-by stared at two police officers chasing a young man who was discharged by the court. They re-arrested him and locked him in the police waiting van.
The accused person, Mbaye Njie, was standing trial for stealing before Magistrate Buba Jawo. On three occasions his case could not proceed due to the absence of the prosecution witnesses. On the third sitting of the trial he was discharged by the trial magistrate for lack of diligent prosecution. As he was moving out of the court premises he was pursued by two officers up to the Banjul Serrekunda highway and dragged back to the police waiting van. He insisted that he would not enter the van or accept to be arrested after he was discharged by the court. He insisted on seeing the magistrate to explain the matter but was not allowed by the officers. He was later pushed forcefully in the waiting van with the assistance of three other officers. He complained bitterly but the police officers insisted that they have the right to re-arrest him even though he was discharged by the court.
