I lost my phone wilst on the river Gambia. It fell into the water. To claim on my travel insurance I reported it to the police who wanted 750 Dalasi to log it and issue me with log number. Is this correct.
No it not correct. I would suggest you contact your travel insurance and tell your story. Also report it to the British High Commision in banjul and copy to the foreign office London.Corruption is begining to kill the tourist industry in Gambia, we must all try to stop it. I personally will take a copy of this to state house next week.
I will suggest that if asked to pay for a police report you demand an official receipt which in effect should show the full payment you made .This would help you show any relevant authority what you have paid and in case of a query you would have had some documentary evidence to prosecute any deceitful acts there of.I do not think one has to pay to lodge a complaint of loss to the police but one does have to pay to get a certificate of loss from the police .It is not free thats for sure.
there is a fee for all paper work in Gambia, especially travel losses, how much is 750 dls, get a receipt, and take a witness if you can, MAKE SURE THE RECEIPT IS STAMPED AND ON OFFICIAL HEADED PAPER, can you go to another police station and see what they say.
Thanks for the input I did go to a different police station Wher the report was filed I had to pay 150 Dalasi for a sworn statent and then 150 for a police report to submit my claim in th Uk But no reciept was given allthough reqested So all in all the cost was varstly different to what I was quoted of 750 dalasi at a different police staion. Thanks again
Tisme, that should tell you that it was wrong, you should not have done it without a receipt. Why would one station ask you 750 and another charge you something else? It seems that you have just paid money to fuel the corruption machine in the Gambia...
