You can't, because bigamy does not apply to muslim countries. |

Frankly, I think such cases go to heart of the problem as to what is wrong with the judicial system in Gambia. They are crimilinalizing so many people by having such laws on our books. How can bigamy be a crime when it is the norm for men in Gambia to have more than one wife, be them muslim, christian, or otherwise. I stand to be corrected, but even in the bible, it is not stated anywhere that men should marry one wife. |

I thought Gambian men were allowed UP TO 4 wives. It is not complusory!!!!
I thought the man had to be able to provide for hte wives. So if a man takes more than one wife and cant look after them properly I think that should be considered Bigamy. It is my understanding that it should only be done with the agreement of other wives. So if it is done without their agreement, that is bigamy.
Finally if he takes more than the limit of 4 ! What crazy man would want 5 or more wives?!!!!!! Then that is bigamy. |

No Gambian men are not allowed up to four wives. Muslim men are, as reference here by this quranic verse [Chapter 4, verse 3]
"If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice."
Furthermore, a man does not need the consent of other wives to marry another woman. This is not a privilege, its a right! My point is that having bigamy in our laws show how blindly we have followed what the British left behind. I am not blaming the British, I blame ourselves. |

You say its a RIGHT to have 4 wives and the other wives have no say in the matter....I think that is treating them as possessions, like the latest model car....
Most Gambian men I have spoken to said they wouldnt take a second wife without the first one agreeing to it. Sometimes there a pragmatic reasons which I try to understand, such as the mans brothers wife being widowed, so she is taken in by the family. Or when the first wife cant bear children......

It is God given right to have up to four wives because Allah specifically said so in the Quran. There is no where in the Quran or any other solid authority that says men are required to have consent from other wives in order to marry other women.
Did you for once think that the men who are telling you they will require consent of their first wives before they take a second wife are telling you what you want to hear? They may not intend to excercise their rights but some of are leaving everything on the table like I always tell my wife. |

Am I correct in believing that the practice of taking multiple wives was never sanctioned by The Prophet (peace be upon him)? |

Taking multiple wives was sanctioned by Allah. The Prophet follows what ever was sanctioned by Allah. I hope this answers your question. |
