Pan African Symposium & Halifa Sallah’s Book Launch By Natasha Lawrence Feb 5, 2008, 09:08
For Immediate release
Do you know that for every £1 that goes to Africa for aid, £13 comes out?(New Internationalist 2004) In 1820 Western Europe’s per capita income was 2.9 times Africa’s—and in 1992, 13.2 times (Maddison 2001). These vexed questions of Africa’s political, economic and psychological liberation are the focus of a Pan African symposium to be held on the 23rd of February 2008 at the African Caribbean Centre in Leicester. This will also be an occasion for Halifa Sallah, one of Africa’s foremost intellectual giants to launch his new book:
Treatise On Founding A Federation Of African Republics
The Road to African Unity, Democracy and Development
The Third Phase of Pan Africanism
The day will be punctuated by a keynote speech from Halifa Sallah, a founding member of the Pan African Parliament and other distinguished speakers as well as cultural and artistic performances and opportunities to network. The issues that blight Africa will be the focus of the symposium and participants would be expected to engage in and propose ways forward. In his book, Halifa writes that:
Humankind has imposed on our generation the duty to redeem humanity. We have the option to fulfil our mission or betray it. Any generation that fails to build a society which its children are proud to inherit is a failed generation. Our duty, which is the duty of all generations, is to hand over to our children a better society than we have inherited from our fathers.
According to Momodou Sallah, a Senior Lecturer at De Montfort University; this event is well overdue and will bring together people from all works of life to explore the connections between Africa and the rest of the world; more importantly an opportunity to bridge theory and practice and take action. He further states that those who hear Halifa speak passionately and knowledgeably about the plight of Africa will be touched irrevocably.
This event is being supported by the African Caribbean Citizen’s Forum in its bid to promote civic awareness and community cohesion.
A huge turnout of academics, practitioners, activists and the general public are expected to attend. All ticketing and media enquiries should be directed to Natasha Lawrence at the African Caribbean Citizens Forum on Tel: 0116 2530947 or email: natasha@accforum.co.uk
