I heard them talking one day and the trees were from different species. There was a Bentenki or Bantangba , tomorong the thorny one, mango of the evergreen leaves but among them is kaanifing too. Talking trees indeed and they argued for a long time about what made them unique as a species. Outstanding and more outspoken is the bentenki who claims that it was the best among them, because it was the biggest, the tallest and offers the best shade of them all. The rest waited for it to finish and then commenced attacking it's other facets starting from its nuisance when it spreads its silkcotton seeds from their pods to the selfish arrogance it displays in disregard of others. He became silent and ignored them . The rest continued their talking and went on to discuss what bonds they share and how they can help each other. The agreement reached was to fend for each other because they remembered what happened to the faaraa and jambakatang trees years gone by. The story was that the said two were entangled in a bitter fued and they wished each other all kinds of hellish things. One day a farmer decided to get some jambakatang leaves to give to his sick wife as medicine ,having cut the leaves and branches; he needed a rope to tie the bundle and suitably nearby was the faara tree, he hacked into the barky sides and made a very good rope for his purposes. When he left the forest, faaraa and jambakatang sat down to talk about what befell them and came to the conclusion that what affects one's neighbours hardly sidelines the other neighbour. Aahi dekandorr jaarna moito, see nyo kubooka seenyo kaari wallahi !

Thanks
Is that why "Faaraa" is very useful for both making Kankarrango(roof) and Kankurango.....I see.......... thats why is good to have and be in peace with all...........and Jambakatang is good for the flu and many other sicknesses as well........ It would be intresting to know what the active elements are.... in both........... |

The uses for any of these trees are many and only those who deal in them could give the elements they contain , my fula friends would use the faaraa fibers to create taafo /juju so to speak , use the fibers for tying rafters etc. the jambakatang I understand is very potent as an aphrodisiac .an old pa friend told me he uses the sprouts and dries them then pounds the dried leaves to add to his meals or drink as tea according to him that helped his sexual potentials to the extent that at the ripe old age of over 80 he could get a new baby from his maanyo ha ha ha ha.Trees in the forest like us humans at home have our various potentials and none of us should ignore the other because God made man and imbued us with certain things we could use as a community .If we harness our various values we could climb to the sky as Yahya says the sky is the limit but then ;there you go ,whilst some dig others bury the ditch so goes the cycle |

It is high time we patent these trees. Don’t you think…….. I think so In the mid 90s, there was a case in India about how scientist from America and Europe get information about trees and other useful herbs from the local people. Then go back to their modern labs to extract and make a synthetic copy of the elements and earn lots of money from that knowledge without paying a penny to the rightful owners. The case ended up by the producing companies agreeing to pay a proportion of their profits into a fund for rural development.

I recommend the sinjang roots and just like the ginseng of fabulous fame it is very potent as aphrodisiac. The dosage varies according to need but moderation is advised . You get the roots soaked in water and add honey and drink it after it ferments. I also advice that those having stomach ailments desist from this concoction as it at times cause discomfort or some bruising in the stomach causing hemorrhages etc. But its potency is proven from a personal perspective. Please approach it with due care .After all it is good to spice up our lives especially down under and i do not mean Australia huh! |

Yep i saw some guys who brewed that stuff and drank it as 'attaya tea' they went bunkers pronto.Actually I do not know if it is Safe to talk about this particular herb here, but the fact remains that it is a very strong brew . I might just add that who ever tries the stuff as a drink rather than use it as herbal treatment would find that he/she would suffer some strange effects similar to delirium and temporary insanity. Please do not indulge in that escapade. There are certainly some curative values of Kubay jaara one i remember was its leaves placed on sores or 'ndinbooths' as we used to call those foot problems as kids. The name seems to be apt for it is reportedly very good for some of our ills and ailments |

Thanks Kaanibaa and Santanfara
Do you know of any book about Gambian trees/fauna or something dealing with the vegetation of the Gambia specifically? I found a “hand book” from 1972 by one D. Gledhill (Longman Group Limited, Longman House, Burnt Mill, Harlow, Essex) But I could only find information about the Locust Bean Tree, Nettoh, in it.
What I found interesting the last time I was in the Gambia is that there are lots of roots and herbs sold in the markets. Moreover, I meet people selling all kinds of root and herb brews good for all kinds of sicknesses........interesting. I was wondering what that can tell us about the condition of health and healthcare at home.
And you know the Kangkurango has to get some Jalloh leafs to complete the Farrah to be able to pursue the Buwallu all night long

You only find the Kubéjaro in highly restricted botanic gardens, because of its high concentration of psychoactive substance, its a hallucinogen. I´ve heard lots of stories about its effects...oohh!!!!!! |

Perhaps you could get this literature at the department of forestry or from some forestry officials in the Gambia.I doubt that you will fail to get such information from the national library in Banjul. Give it a try who knows what you can dig out yeah. Interesting though I miss the king killiba or bush tea with it's nice scent. It makes a very good brew wow yummy yum yum and mouth watering goodies of home sho- Gambia deeyata . |

Thanks. I will try the department of forestry and or the library.
I remember the story of a Canadian exchange student who tried the Kubéjaro in Basse and was found in Jarra tree weeks later. Nettoh is very useful in August, during the malaria season because it helps against the fever, I heard. Remember the Nettoh seeds are also cooked and fermented for use in cooking.
The Baobab tree is the most useful tree, because all parts of it are useful, I heard. The leafs, the fruit………… Santanfara, very interesting how the I fanbundi band, used the term to mean Self-presentation…….. Great people.....
