please can someone explain to me the following unclear issue.
the president has a foundation for HIV/AIDS.
On the face of it , a man in the street such as myself, would assume this means that he is the Patron and possible benefactor of an organisation which looks after victims, funds research and provides supports to the families who have lost loved ones.

Is this correct for this foundation, headed by this man?

i notice he is having a shindig for this foundation tonight at the Senegambia beach hotel Even Baaba Maal is on stage in this show.

The report says that it celebrates His "therapy" , but does not use the word "cure".

My question today....

does he claim to cure it or does he claim to provide palliative relief only?

please can someone tell me if they have met anyone who has been through his "therapy" or has spoken to anyone who actually knows what the heck is going on.
It seems to be all rather vague and rumour-filled.

What exactly does the Pres think he can do for these sufferers?

If it is nonsense , as some people think it must be, myself
included, then how can people celebrate this circus of delusion?
If it is a genuine attempt to help , and not a claim to cure, then great, celebrate and raise awareness.

but for goodness sake, which is it?
what is the truth?

An excellent question Lurker. What is (the) truth indeed??

Mr - sorry Dr (how did that happen) Jammeh claims to be able to cure HIV patients and has his foundation in place.

The way I see it is this: the foundation istelf may well help patients by offering support and repief from pain and some conditions associated with AIDS. But he can not cure it - and should, I believe, not be claiming he can. Offering halp and relief - now that would be a good, positive, humanitarian thing to do.
Do I think he's doing that? Sadly, I don't because it seems to me that it's all about publicity.
Why do people believe? Fot the same reason they voted for him .... you can con some of the people most of the time and most of the people some of the time......

Lurker,

Baba Maal is not stupid enough to stake his reputation on the line as top of the bill for a bogus Aids concert! Whatever relief these patients are receiving is a blessing because as we all know that the prognosis
for Aids is not fantastic. So if these patients are recieving a better quality of life and feel much better than they did before; to express to others that their symptoms are cured, who are we to begrudge them better health.

Peace

Interesting topic which no one seems to be able to answer.
The presidents credibility went out of the window when he said he had found a cure for aids. If that had of been the case Gambia would now be the riches country in Africa with the millions of aids sufferes around the world and the major scientists around the world trying to find a cure fo the last 20 years they would beating a path to buy it. No the mans joke and can people realy belive anything he says

I hope this Observer article can CURE your ??
http://www.observer.gm/africa/gambia/banjul/article/2007/10/25/19-hivaids-patients-discharged

President Yahya Jammeh thanked Allah for given him the knowledge to cure HIV/AIDS.
President Jammeh’s success in the cure for HIV/AIDS is monumental.

President Jammeh DID NOT SAY that he cures AIDs,
all what he said was that he treats AIDS

President Jammeh’s discovery of the medicine to cure HIV/AIDS,
President Jammeh’s therapy is the latest and the most effective medicine available at the moment for the cure of HIV/AIDS.
the results of President Jammeh’s cure for HIV/AIDS, can no longer be doubted.
Today they are alive and are living proofs that President Jammeh can get rid of and will get rid of HIV/AIDS.

Is it a cure?
Is it a treatment?
Is it something else?

Was this spokeperson suffering from some delirious fever!

IS Doctor Ansumana Jammeh, a nephew to President Jammeh,
still the traditional medical doctor and Head of the Presidential Medical Team?
as stated in http://www.statehouse.gm/images/hiv-aids-batch4/index.htm

Have a good weekend!

Sister Omega, honeymoon successful, i hope!
baaba maal also likes publicity - it sells records - and when did a popstar not like engratiating himself with the ruling regime? they are all toadying for Publicity and money too, just like your man.
i agree with you at first - a better quality of life, symptomatic relief, palliative medicines, support - all vital parts of helping people through a terrible affliction.this is what an Aids foundation can offer - all it can offer, alas.
BUT!!!!
more smoke and mirrors.
what do you mean their symptoms are cured?
how do you know?
does he claim to have a cure for hiv/aids?
does he have a marabout cure for their headaches?
does he reverse kaposi's sarcoma or PCP pneumonia?
Methinks not!
I know you love the man, but can you please stop asserting that people would not support a bogus Aids concert.
It is either a fundraiser for help or it is actually celebrating a cure from mr Pres.
WHICH ONE?????????????
you have not shed any light on the matter, like everybody you talk of hearsay, rumours, suppositions, - you want to believe him - yet there is no basis in fact. I am a scientist. i want evidence-based facts, not witchdoctor bone-throwing.
This is why i asked for anyone who knows anything concrete to answer.
we all know no-body will or can.
because we are all being diddled by an amateur PR machine with a hidden agenda - not so hidden, though. He ought to be handing out triple therapy anti-retrovirals, not false hopes and pipe-dreams. To torment the dying, to provide false hope, to deepen the agonies with impossible claims of miracle cures- shameful, disgraceful, sub-human.he ought to be draining the sewage and stagnant water to get rid of mozzies. he ought to be building hospitals instead of promising oil money. he ought to be handing out quinine in the rainy season. he ought to be helping people whom he can actually help instead of wining and dining popsingers and carting his belaboured wife off to USA as he does not trust the Gambian hospitals to look after her birthing. If he invested in a ddecent hospital, he would get the best PR ever - and deserved votes- by making a big thing of the fact that she did give birth in the Motherland.
total nonsense from a total waste of space.
prove him right, somebody and let me know, or the above is the real truth and i challenge anyone to prove me wrong.
we would all love it if i was, especially the afflicted.
peace, Sister.
p.s. maybe he is just actually stark-raving plain old mad.

Snuggles, He also said, 'diabetes, asthma & hypertension' - well that's the adults sorted then!

Now onto measles, chicken-pox & mumps - for the children!

Lurker,

There is even more fatal weakness about Jammeh's claims. For more than 13 years now, he stays telling Gambians one bigger lie topping an older lie. Worst of it all, people talk or write as though they believe when deep down their skull, they believe not a word of Jammeh.Look closely and you will not miss out that Jammeh says one thing when he means diametrically an opposite situation. Translating this means resetting your chain on reverse motion to capture Jammeh's deceptive scheme played on Gambians. JAMMEH IS A TOTAL DECEIT in all his dealings with Gambians. He knows he is playing. These are all part of TIME BUYING SCHEMES if you care to conclude.

If Jammeh is giving the aids patients a better life quality, then thats a great thing to do.
But thats not the case, Jammeh is giving these patients a false hope. When he tells these people that hes has a cure, their hopes of being cured get sky high and when they do not get cured, everything in their lives fall apart. That does nt sound like good life quality to me. C´mon sis, you and I both know that Jammeh does not have a cure for aids or any other desease for that matter, lts get real. Jammeh is a phony and has been nothing but a disappointment to the gambian people.

When Jammeh's claims were made public, people thought it was an early April fool joke. Many people around the world working in high tech clinical settings trying to find a cure and he does it simply using banana leaves and the Koran!

Later on the story was changed. This time the Koran had no part in it, just a "herbal mixture". So which is it? No wonder people were questioning it. The man is not even a doctor. He claims the cure came to him in a dream. So now the man will have you believe that he is a prophet and healer too.

Worse still, the articles written in the daily observer were written and guided by government representatives under the supervision of Jammeh. These articles do nothing other than use this claim of a cure as a political tool to strengthen support for Jammeh. Like the claim that he is a Godfearing man who does not use the cure for any reason but to serve God. If that was the case, why not extend this miraculous cure to all humanity, why only Gambians? Why not make it available to the whole world?

He continued on this self-promoting quest by funding a documentary about this process, which shows him treating some patients. What the documentary does not show is all the people who died despite receiving his treatment, or because of it. But more on that in a little while...

So no wonder people were questioning his claim, but many questioned out of good intentions. Because Gambians don't need false hope, neither do the AIDS sufferers and their families. If the cure was indeed legitimate, where is the proof and why is it not being made available for public scrutiny? Those are the fundamental premises of all scientific discoveries today: evidence and public scrutiny. Why shouldn't people be allowed to ask these questions?

Jammeh did not tolerate any line of questioning on his alleged cure. When UN representative Fadzai Gwaradzimba questioned it, she was expelled from Gambia. Jammeh's own health minister, Tamsir Mbow, who is a medical doctor and was instrumental in backing up Jammeh's claims, suddenly was dismissed, reportedly for some comments he made on the sidelines. Demba Jawo, an independent reporter, is now living in exile after threats made against him while investigating the claims. The Daily Observer has done nothing but praise Jammeh for this 'discovery', without any angles of inquiry, possessing any significant proof, or the expression of alternative viewpoints. The only conclusion one can make from this is that Jammeh has no proof and anyone who may make light of that fact is immediately attacked in attempt to cover up the weakness of this so called scientific discovery. He exercises control of the media to avoid any consequences to his claims and actions. Even newspapers reputed to be independent like The Point, have been quiet about it and reported mainly along the same lines as the Observer. This will not surprise many of you on the Bantaba. But Jammeh cannot have full control of the media. The West has spoken. Also, Gambians on the internet have spoken. See these articles:

The most alarming fact is the very reason that there is an HIV/AIDS epidemic in Gambia and the rest of Africa - the lack of education on HIV/AIDS and safe sex. Many Gambians do not know they are carrying HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) until it becomes full blown AIDS. Condom use is still baulked at by men and there are still beliefs that condoms are only for the sexually promiscuous. Relatively few are aware that many of the victims of HIV/AIDS are people who are faithful to their partners or have not even been sexually active. Some of them got it from partners who may or may not have been faithful. Some were born with it by cross-infection from the mother.

Jammeh does nothing to educate the community on how to avoid getting the disease. After suffering mass international criticism for this, he began advocating being faithful to one's partner. This goes to highlight Jammeh's total ignorance of the causes of HIV/AIDS.

While the scientific world has not been able to find a cure for HIV, it has made a lot of discoveries. For instance, the use of Anti Retrovirals (ARV) which slow down the virus. In many cases, when ARVs are used at the initial stage of ARV, a patient is able to live a normal life for many years. Death rates from AIDS have significantly dropped in countries where people are able to access antiretrovirals.

Thanks to genuine scientific discovery, we know that AIDS is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which slowly destroys the body's immune system. When a person develops AIDS, it is the result of a prolonged attack of the immune system by the HIV virus. Scientists believe that at this stage the damage is irreversible, however, it may be possible to reverse the process at earlier stages.

Yet Jammeh professes to be able to cure reverse the effects of this highly persistent and debilitating disease in only 3 days of treatment, without any real proof. One requirement for receiving his herbal treatment is to discontinue using ARVs. The result is we are going to see many HIV/AIDS patients dying. Perhaps his angle is for the population of HIV/AIDS carriers to die out. However, with the majority of HIV carriers being undiagnosed until later stages, this will never happen.

Maybe there is a better explanation. Antiretroviral drugs are very expensive. It puts developing countries at a dilemma. Either the government pays huge costs to make the drugs accessible to the community, or it accepts foreign aid and any conditions that come with it. Neither of these are favourable, but they are essential to the health and growth of Gambia and other developing countries. Jammeh won't "bite the bullet" and do what he has to do for the people.

Jammeh is also an embarassment to the rest of the world who can see right through this charade. Despite repeated requests he has refused to provide any substantial proof, and declined to provide samples of his herbal medicine for testing. Instead, he keeps embellishing his story. He now claims that the alleged remedy cures not only HIV and AIDS, but hypertension, diabetes and asthma too. What next? His continued shinanigans only serve to alienate Gambia from the rest of the world.

nice post , Sisay. you have filled in lot of gaps from one side of the fence. notice that we are still awaiting someone to actually stick up for the other side with facts and information as veritable as your own. as i presumed, they are not going to come, because they do not exist!
I am discounting Omega's response as it was hearsay and provided no evidence for his treatment whatsoever.
so it seems we have a charlatan , quack-doctor masquerading as a healer. and perhaps masquerading as a president, too.
gambia and zimbabwe on the same page at the CHOGM meeting. Mugabe and jammeh in the the same bracket on the agenda at the CHGOM.
that should tell us something.
human rights - what a misnomer - should be called human wrongs.
anyway, i am wondering how many unbelievable events have to occur before this man is voted out(not!) or leaves his office by another route.imagine if gordon brown said he could cure cancer tomorrow, or bush said he could make peace in the middle east in this lifetime etc they would all be laughed out of office. they would not have to be asked to leave.
yet gambia is in a different region with a different culture and values and is smaller and more parochial.
maybe the pres would be believed by the people if he said he had just come back from a goodwill meeting with the Vice-Admiral of the Martian Space fleet.
baffling.
does he have a totally loyal army?
are the neighbours happy with him as leader in their west african brotherhood?
when is the next election?
who are the real opposition?
is there one?

I await Jammeh's message to the world with his alleged cure on Sat, 1st Dec - World AIDS Day.

It will be interesting to see how he takes the stage with this year's Worlds AIDS Day theme 'leadership' and to hear his proposed programme to reduce HIV and abolish HIV prejudice.
