WHO WAS LUCKY DUBE? By Modou Jarju
Lucky Dube was a renowned world Super reggae star born on 3rd August in 1964, in a small town called ERMELO some kilometres away from the main capital Johannesburg in South Africa. He was a Zulu by ethnicity. He released his first Album in 1984. Lucky was in the music scene for 25 years and recorded 22 Albums. He was a real rastafarian, philosopher, Pan Africanist and legend in his own right, who believed in peace, humanity and justice for the poor. He hated racism and contributed to the down fall of the Aparthied regime where thousands of productive citizens of South Africans died and some were made homeless. The music of the late Lucky Dube is a first class music with messages to the rich and poor, especially world leaders, and condemnation of acts of vandalism and abuse of power. Lucky’s mother saw many of her children pass away at an age of three or four months. When Lucky was born, his late parents feared giving him a name. People called him “Boy”after six months, he was named Lucky Dube. Dube in Zulu Language means Zebra. He had seven children namely SIYANDA, LAURA. PHILANI BONGI, THOKOZANI, NONKULUCKO, and a three months old baby MELOKIHLE. Lucky was under the care of his late grandmother called ZAYANE. He met his untime death on Thursday 18 October at the age of 43 while dropping off two of his children at the family compound.
Mr. Tijan Camara, a tailor in Dippakunda in his remarks, said the killing of Lucky Dube was a shock, a blow to the continent of Africa and Reggae, in particular; claiming that he was the only reggae super star in Africa.
Mr. J.P, a fan and a Nigeria national, pointed out that the killers of Lucky Dube committed the highest crime in the world by killing of the continent’s only reggae super star who promoted the African course.
Abu White from Sierra Leone, in his own words said, he cried when he heard the news. He added that it will take another hundred years to replace a reggae super star like him.
Mr. Lamin Camara, a lecturer at GTTI, and Mrs. Lenah Badjie both expressed their deepest sorrow about the death of Lucky Dube as number one reggae super star in Africa whose death they described as a bomb shell to the entire continent of Africa. They added that people in Africa, Jamaica, Europe, America, Asia and Caribbean, all honour his music.
Some musicians will come and go but Lucky Dube will always be remembered by the people. The question is when shall we the Africans stop the attitude of killing our heros, our intellectuals, our freedom fighters, etc? It is an unpardonable, a destructive, humiliating and catastrophic act that rocks our continent (Africa). The time has come for us (Africans) to use our heads and avoid killing our intellectuals. We should love peace and be development oriented. Africa lost great people like Diallo Telli, Steve Biko, etc. Lucky Dube was laid to rest on Sunday 28 October in his own town, where thousands of fans all over the world attended the burial of the Lion, hero and philosopher.
May his soul rest in eternal peace Ameen!!!
