NaNA TO PROVIDE VITAMIN A AND DEWORMING TABLETS FOR MEASLES CAMPAIGN By Yaya Bajo
As stakeholders in the health delivery services intensify preparatory measures for the forthcoming nationwide campaign on measles, the National Nutrition Agency (NaNA) is poised to provide vitamin A and deworming tablets as their contribution towards the imitative. This was divulged to Foroyaa by the agency’s senior programme officer, Mr. Malang M. Fofana in a chat with this author on Monday October 29 at his offices in Bakau. “We are part of the coordinating committee both at national and international levels and the provision of vitamin A and deworming tablets fall in our purview,” he pointed out. He added that NaNA would also provide both technical and material support with a view to ensuring the success of the campaign, which is slated for November 27 to December 3rd, 2007. He said the agency has divisional field officers across the country and their role in the campaign will be to facilitate the success of the programme and to ensure that vaccinators receive adequate training on the administration of vitamin A and deworming tablets during campaign.
When quizzed on the importance of vitamin A and deworming tablets to children, Mr. Fofana replied that vitamin A deficiency is more common in children and this can lead to eye damage which can lead to blindness, increased risk of infection and even death. He defined vitamin A as a substance needed by the body in small amounts for proper growth and healthy development. For deworming tablet, Fofana argued that worm infestation is high among children and it contributes immensely to malnutrition. He said deworming children would tremendously help in preventing the child becoming malnourished and anaemic.
Mr. Fofana concluded by revealing that vitamin A tablets will be administered to children within the age bracket of 6 to 59 months (just less than five years), while deworming tablets will be given to children between the ages of 1 to 5 years old.
