MARRIAGE AND FAMILY Discrimination In The Family By Amie Sillah Part 1
Haja Oumu work at the Ministry of Education as a Principal Education Officer (PEO). Her hard work and diligence made her promotion rapid. Within a year she was promoted to the position of a Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education. She was overwhelmed. She became totally transformed. Earlier she was pleasant, easy going and loved working in a team and being a team leader. But as soon as she was promoted, she became a mediocre, arrogant and rude boss who imposes her ideas and does not listen to anyone. ‘The know it all’ human being. She became secluded and has a class attitude. Haja Oumu looks up to her superiors. She adorns authority but looks down on her juniors as thrash.
She brought the same attitude into her family. She is a widow blessed with two girls. The Senior sister adores wealth and hopes to marry a rich guy. The Junior sister is easy-going and down-to-earth. She hopes to marry for love and to be in a mutually rewarding relationship.
Haja favours Bani, her eldest daughter who sees and appreciates wealth but shurns Zainab who sees simplicity and real love. Haja organised a cocktail dinner party where she hoped to sell her girls to the rich and mighty. She invited the class in society. Zainab deliberately refused to attend. Earlier Haja gave the girls money to buy expensive clothes, jewelry, shoes and bags to match. Zainab returned her mother’s money. Haja was furious. She came back and reprimanded Zainab. “You returned my money and refused to attend my party. I’ll deal with you. Nobody slaps me and go scott-free! I’ll get at you”. She threatened. She framed Sulayman, Zai’s fiancé, accused him of stealing from her house. She got him tortured and detained. Haja employed such tactics to disway Saul but did she succeed? Bani met Mr. Right at the cocktail party and took off from there. The relationship grew into passion and later into marriage. Bani’s dream came true. She married a rich guy. Haja felt fulfilled. Was her expectations met? She discriminated against Zainab. She loathed her fiancé and wished him evil. How did the two scenarios ended? Read to find out.
Principal Education Officer
Haja Oumu was deligent in her work as a Principal Education Officer. She pulled well with the Senior Education Officers in her region. She is a team leader and works in a team. Before she was posted to Region Two, the Grade 12 results were always poor especially the core subjects Maths, English Science and Social Environmental Studies. Her predecessor could not solve the problem. She solved her problem in Region one. She was recalled to handle Region Two. Haja called a meeting of the heads of schools and Senior Education Officers. They discussed about the poor results and the way forward. They dissect the parents’ problems, the teachers, the system and the students’ themselves. The solution: (1) A Parent Teacher Association was to be formed where it did not exist; were it does, it have to be reactivated (2) Extra-Mural classes have to be made compulsory to change the trend. The meeting adjourned until later to assess the situation.
The Girls With Their Friends
Bani and Zai are visited by their friends Yatou and Cynthy. They were engaged in girls’ chatter, mocking and teasing each other. Zai quarreled with all of them. She is quick tempered. Mum came very exhausted, hungry and thirsty. After greetings, she asked one of the girls to give her food. Bani ordered Zai to give mummy food. “Zai! Zai why didn’t you give her food yourself? Am I the only available person?” “Yes! You are the youngest”. “So?” Give mummy food!” Yatou and Cynthy mocked at Zai. She quarreled with all of them before finally getting her mum food. Zai sulked. The friends bade good bye and left.
Mum And Her Girls
Mum ate with her kids. “Hum! The food is tasty! Who prepared it?” “I did” Zai responded. “But mum! Talk to Bani. She likes ordering me around. Zai do this! Zai do that all the time!” “Mum! Let Zai know I am her eldest and have that prerogative right!” put in Bani. “Oh! So you girls argued as to who should serve me food? Thank Allah! You have not starved me!” Put in mum. “Anyway, the food is tasty Zai, keep it up!” She commended her daughter.
Mum And Zainabou
As she was going to work, she called Zai to go for an errand. Zai declined saying she wanted to go to the library to research an assignment. Bani came out and said the contrary. “It’s a lie. She had an appointment with Saul, her boyfriend”. Zai protested. “Mummy! She is at it again. She troubles me all the time with her useless friends”. Mum took a stand. “Bani! Let her be! Stop molesting your sister”. She turned to Zai and said. “Go to the library and complete your assignment. I am an educationist, your assignments are my priority”. Zai mocked at her sister who frown at her.
Mum And Aminatta, Her Sister-in-law
Aminatta came to visit mum. She querried that Haja was not see at their monthly family meeting. “Everyone asked after you? What happened?” “I was busy at work, balancing my accounts and writing my report. I completely forgot. I am sorry. I’ll attend next month,” She promised. “I am hungry! Anything?” Haja smiled. “This is your home. There is ‘findi’ and fu-fu”. “Give me findi. That’s my delicacy”.
The Girls
The girls were busy discussing about who is an ideal man. Bani spoke “My ideal man is rich, smartly dressed, flamboyant and generous”. Zai spoke. “My ideal man is loving, respectful and god-fearing”. Zai is not impressed by Bani’s ideal man. She criticized Bani’s class attitude after she described the recent rich man she met. “I asked for his card and she gave me. He is mega rich. He wore an expensive perfume and wrist watch. If you see his shoes and suit! Waw!” “What does he do for a living?” “He is rich! That’s all! Let him only be generous and extravagant!” “You are sick! I am not impress. Beware of money ritualists and drug dealers”. “Watch your evil mouth Zainab!” Bani put her hand on the ground, pick some sand and rubbed it on Zai’s mouth.
Mum Joins In
Mum came into the house. She joined the conversation. She asked Bani. “Who is your ideal man?” She smile and said. “My ideal man is tall, fair coloured, handsome, humourous and above all mega rich”. Mum smiled and turned to Zai. “Who is your ideal man?” Zai responded. “Respectful, loving, intelligent and god-fearing”. Mum shook her head. “You both have a point but let me emphasized. An ideal man should be intelligent, your love for each other should be mutually rewarding and you should have a common goal. Above all, he should be tolerant and god-fearing. Your late dad was like that. That’s why since his death I refused to re-marry again. My world is my two girls and my career”. Zai spoke. “But mum! Advice Bani. She is obsessed with a flamboyant lifestyle and she adores wealth. All that glitters is not gold”. “That’s true my daughter. Don’t be shallow!” She advised Bani who frown at her sister.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY Discrimination In The Family
Part 2
News Of Her Appointment
Haja was not aware. She came to work and continued her normal schedule. Co workers came to congratulate her. “For what!” She exclaimed. “You are promoted to the rank of a Perm Sec. It is being announced over radio”. They said. “What? Unbelievable!” “No! it is not. You deserve more. You are a deligent team leader. We wish you well madam”. “Thank you”. She said. Then her mobile rank. The call was from the Secretary of State (SoS). “Congratulations Madam! You have been promoted. Keep up the momentum!” “Thank you Ma! Thank you!” She exclaimed with excitement.
Gives News To Daughters
Bani was doing laundry at the backyard. Her mum called to give the good news. Bani jumped up the sky. “What? Mum! Congrats! Let me inform Zai. She is in her room”. “Okay! I am coming just now. We need celebration”. “Thank you mum! Thank you!” Bani shouted Sai’s name. “Zainab! Zainab! Come good news! Good news!” Zai came but rushing. “What is the good news? I am all ears”. “Mum is promoted to the rank of a Permanent Secretary. Our class status is raised. Don’t you get it?” The two girls rejoiced and thanked Allah.
Mummy Comes Home
Mum came to a happy home. They cooked a delicious dish, drank juice and played music. “It is great!” They all exclaimed.
Transfer To New Quarters
The family relocated to Government Quarters. Senior Servants have privileges. The family was very happy. Zai lamented missing the old house. “Nonsense! Try to get and appreciate class. How can we stay at the old house when Mum’s status have risen?” They started their girlish arguments again. Mum stopped them. “Not again! New year new style. Forget about the old squabbles and start all over again”. She advised. “Lets eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we may die”. She said.
New Style
Bani dressed to go to the shop. Mum called her back. “Look at your dress! You look like a Slut at Red Light District. You are making yourself a victim of abuse. Go back into your room and change your immoral dress”. Bani defended herself. “I thought it okay. I am just buying bread at the shop”. “Is the shop not in the street? Go in there and change. I am not entertaining any argument”. “Okay!” Bani went back and changed her dress reluctantly.
Zai With A Male Friend
A male course colleague, Mustapha came to share notes with Zainab. As they were discussing, Mum entered the compound. Zai was scared to death. She signaled Mustapha to leave. Mum passed him on his way out. He greeted her but she refused to respond. “Who is he?” She asked her daughter. “He is Mustapha, my course mate. He came for us to share notes”. “Nonsense! I disallow and forbid it! Men are callous and mean. They take advantage of naive fools like you. Take care of yourself. Be focus!” “Okay mum!” Zai responded. She was glad to cool off the temperature. Mum asked for Bani. “She is out mum”. Zai replied.
Transfer To The New House
They are now officially transferred to the new house with an official car and orderly to escort Haja Oumu around.
High Class Life
Haja criticized her gateman. “Come here Musa! What is this?” She examined his dress. “Your shirt is torned and rumpled! Have you quarrel with iron? Look at you shoes! You wore slippers to manage my gate? Go and change your dress and wear sandals. If I ever see you dress like this again, you’ll be sacked! Get out of my sight”. Mose went to change to secure his job.
Meeting Heads Of The Various Regions
Haja called a meeting of the Educational Heads of Regions. They all attended. She gave her sets of rules. One officer tried to rectify her but she blasted him. “Shut up! No one interrupts while I speak. You have to obey my instructions without any hesitation. I worked in the field for forty years. I know what is there. I did an exemplary work at Region one. That’s why I was recalled to handle Region Two before my present promotion. Do as I say. I was there before you. Okay! Go back to your various regions and implement my orders. Understood!” “Yes ma!” They responded. Before she left a lady raised her hand. “Yes!” “Madam! We cannot make any observation or comment?” “It is unnecessary. I have spoken. Good day!” She left. The heads of Regims shook their heads. “She was rude and disgusting!” they exclaimed.
Taking To SoS
As Haja talked to SoS you noticed total submission. She became a humble servant. “Yes ma! I understand. Okay! Consider it done. Bye-bye”. She put down her phone. SoS was asking Haja to do an errand for her. If you look up, you have to look down.
At Home
Saul came to visit his girl friend. The orderly announced that a visitor is asking after Zai. “Who is he? Has he a car?” “Madam! I don’t know him. He came on foot”. Let him come in”. Haja said nonchalantly
Visitor Is Questioned
Saul came in and greeted Haja. She answered snobbishly and refused to give him a seat. She called Zai. She came into the sitting room. She was excited to see Saul. As she went to greet him Haja stopped her. “Stop! Sit down! Don’t go to him”. Zai sat down. She felt embarrassed. Haja started her questioning. She belittled and discriminated against Sulayman. “Who are you? Who are your parents? Where do you work?” She did not give him time to answer the questions. Zai protested. “Offer him a seat for Allah’s sake. Why are you embarrassing my friend with all these irrelevant questions?” “Nonsense! Shut up! He has to answer before he is welcomed in my home”. “Well! My name is Sulayman Faal. I am an accountant working at the Continental Bank. My parents are poor peasants living at the village”. “You are below our class. You cannot marry my daughter. Get out of my house!” Zai wanted to follow him. “Stop! Go into your room”. Haja ordered.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY
Discrimination In The Family By Amie Sillah
Part 3
Zainabou Is Disappointed
Zainabou is embarrassed and disappointed. Mum has turned into a monster. She embarrassed and humiliated her children. Zainab cried for help.
Bani Comes Into Her Room
Bani heard the sobs and came into her room. She cuddled her into her arms and enquired. “What’s the matter Nabou? Why are you crying so bitterly?” “It is Mum. She is on my life. She embarrassed and humiliated Saul. What is her problem? Am I not twenty years old? I can take care of myself. If she continues with this horrendous behaviour, I’ll quit. I can live on my own. After all, I am an adult, I can take care of myself.” “No! No! Never contemplate doing that. This is Africa, The Gambia. People kin talk. What will they say? That you are unmarried and living on your own. You’ll be labeled as rotten and wayward.” “Who cares? How many girls are already living on their own or with boyfriends? That was a taboo before but no more. I am fed up and tired with Mum’s taunts and bickering. She has turned into a monster. I can no longer tolerate her.” Zainab insisted. But Bani is not tired. She gave her solidarity and convinced her out of her intention. “This is your home. Exercise patience. That’s Mum’s nature now. How many times did she do it to me. Blow! Take it easy girl!” Bani cooled off her temper. She made fun to make her laugh.
Saul Is Angry
Saul is angry. He was belittled and humiliated. He wanted to give up the relationship. Zainab visited him and found him in a sad mood. She apologized for Mum’s action. Saul insisted on calling off the relationship. “But why? I am not Mum. I am not part of her problem. I am old enough. I can take care of myself. Don’t leave me now. If you do I’ll die of shame.” Zai pleaded. “Your Mum had embarrassed and humiliated me. How can I continue with a babe whose Mum loath my very presence. I am in a dilemma. I love you with all my heart but your Mum’s attitude towards me pissed me off.” Zainab cried over his lap. Saul’s heart got softened. He also cried and cuddled Zainab.
Aunty Isha Asks For A Loan
Aunty Isha is Mum’s sibling, her younger sister. She is a seamstress, blessed with twelve children. Her husband Ousman works as a postman with a meager salary. They cannot make ends meet. Aunty Isha’s tailoring business supplements the family feeding budget. Before Mum’s transformation into a monster, she used to help her a lot but not now. She taunts and calls her names. She timidly entered the sitting room and found Mum drinking ‘attaya’ being brewed by her orderly. She became impatient with her blood sister. “What can I do for you? You see I am busy now relaxing after a busy office schedule.” Aunty Isha spoke her mind. “Can I see you in private?” She requested. Then sense entered Mum’s head. She asked the orderly to leave for some minutes. She left. Aunty Isha continued. “I want you to loan me D10,000 to buy some materials to sew some African designs. My friend Amina is going to the US. She will take them along. There is a good market. When she returns with my money, I’ll pay you instantly. I don’t want to lose this golden opportunity.” She hissed, frown at her sister and started her bickering. “I have no rest, no privacy. Won’t you people leave me alone? Oumu this! Haja that! Am I the only rich relative? Go to others now! Stop invading my privacy and pestering me. I am fed up!” Then she thought hard. “Come to my office tomorrow at midday. I’ll give you D5,000. That is what I can afford.” Aunty Isha jumped up from her seat. “Thank you my dear sissy. May Allah overflow your wealth fountain. May God bless you.” “God had already blessed me. Parasites! You kept on praying may God bless you just to suck my blood. I am tired of all these begging! You refused to plan your life. Look at you at 40, you have a football team with a reserve. It is not how many children you have but how well you meet their basic needs. A person can have one blessed child and live happily for life, while another have a trunk load full of lumpens, vagabonds, thieves and prostitutes.” Aunty Isha was insulted and humiliated but she had no choice. Let her just have the money and continue with her business.
Saul In His House
Hassan entered the house and found Saul in a thoughtful mood. “Sulayman Bun! What is eating you up? Can we share the burden? I am a friend. I can help.” Saul opened up to Hassan. “I want to give up on Zainab.” “Why? Do you want to kill her? No! Don’t ever say that again. Nabou is a faithful, decent girl. She loves you with all her heart. Don’t ever think of leaving her.” Hassan advised. “But what about her Mum? She pesters my life. She hates me with a passion. She threatens to harm me if I don’t leave her daughter. I fear for my life oh! I am an only child of poor peasant parents.” Hassan couraged him. “Don’t mind Haja. She is bluffing. Think about Zainab. She is not like her Mum. She loves and cherishes you, Defend and protect your love. You’ll succeed in the end. Love conquers all.” Hassan patted Saul’s back. “Haja is mean and diabolical. She can go to any extent.” “Leave everything to Allah. God will protect you Inshallah!” Assu gave him courage. He is a good friend. He gives Saul good advice. He listens to his wise counselling.
Dinner Time
At the dinning table Haja gave two cheques to her girls. Each was to receive ten thousand dalasis to shop for clothes, shoes and bags to match. “The cock tail dinner is going to be classic. I want you girls to dress like a peacock. I’ll open my trinket box. You can choose any jewelry, diamond, gold, silver, emerald, ivory, you name it, I have it. I want you glow on that day. It is a fishing expedition. The high and mighty of society will attend. Who knows you might meet your future husbands.” Zainab frowned and protested. “Mummy! You will be disappointed because I’ve already found a husband in Saul.” “Nonsense! Stupid, senseless girl! Never mention that name in my house again!” “I am not interested in your cocktail dinner party. Take your money. I don’t need it.” Zainab handed the cheque back to her Mum. She got up and left. “We shall see who rules this house, you or me? You’ll regret your action! I’ll deal with you!” Haja threatened. Bani was displeased with her sister’s blunt action. She sensed conflict. Both adversaries were determined to stay their ground. She decided to talk to her sister.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY Discrimination In The Family
Bani Advises Zai
Baniatou advised Zainabou. She went to her room and found her seated on her bed. “Sis! Don’t you think you were too harsh with mum?” “How? I was not. I am just being real. Mum is a monster. I’ll not go by her whims and caprices”. “But be polite about it. Take the money. Buy what you want with it. Go to the cocktail party. You may meet or not meet a suitable suitor,” Baniatou advised. “I don’t need a suitor. I have already got one,” Zai refused. Bani got frustrated and left Zai. “You are stubborn! It’s your business. You’ll face the wrath of mum,” Bani warned.
Saul And Zai
The duo went to an outing. Zai explained her experience with mum. “But you should not have refused the gift”. Saul advised. “Why?” Zai asked. “You can take the horse to the river but you cannot force it to drink. You could have accepted her gift, buy what you wanted and stick to your principles when you go to the cocktail party”. “Nonsense! Hear you talk. Mum is not that type of person. She is mean, calculated and cunning. Taking her gift would have been a trap for me. I cannot have my cake and eat it. I am a dignified person. My no is my no, my yes is my yes. I cannot take her implicating gift. I cannot be part of her ploy. I don’t need her suitable suitor. I have already found my Saul”. “That’s fine. It’s your decision. It has to be respected”. They kissed each other.
She Phones The SoS
The cocktail party was in full gear. She phoned the SoS to give her a detailed progress report. “The cream of society is invited as well as two live bands”. “Excellent! You are a perfect organiser. I trust you girl! I do,” the SoS said at the other end. Haja was satisfied with herself. “My boss is pleased. It’s gonna be a high class party!” She exclaimed.
Bani Goes Shopping
Bani went shopping. She shopped ‘Banjul’. She bought so many different things. Haja gave her Zai’s money to add to her own. “She is foolish. I don’t need the money. Add it to your shopping. Buy more”. Bani was excited. She is a greedy person.
The Party
Haja dressed like a queen. She admired Bani. “You look superb. You must attract a big fish”. “Thank you mum! You look superb also”. “Thank you,” Mum responded. As they were about to leave, Haja sked after Zai. “Where is your sister?” “She is not around”. Haja dialed her phone. There was no response. Zai refused to answer it. Haja was furious. “I know where she is. With that thing. I’ll get at him! They defy me and floated my warning? I’ll deal with them. It’s not a threat but a promise. Let’s go,” She told Bani.
Mum And Daughter Meet The Baron
Haja and Bani met the Baron. He called himself Prince Charles but his real name is Alhaji Chernor Baba. He is into Diamond and Gold Mining and he is based in Angola. But he stays about six months in the country. He has also established some industries at home. He is accompanied by a retinue of private guards. It is difficult to see him. But mum and daughter were lucky to meet him face to face. The protocol introduced them to him. “This is Alhaj Chernor Baba alias ‘Prince Charles’. He is a Diamond and Gold Baron and recently he is into oil exploration. He is filthy rich. He is difficult to meet even by the high class. You are lucky to meet him face to face”. The duo greeted him. The protocol went on. He turned to ‘Prince Charles’ and said. “This is our new Permanent Secretary, Department of State for Education. She is Haja Oumu Kaira. She is a genius”. Haja Oumu smiled. Prince Charles extended his hand. “And who is this beautiful lady accompanying you?” “Oh! She is my daughter, Baniatou. She is a senior student studying law at the university”. “Oh nice to meet a dazzling damsel“. He extended his hand to Bani. He dipped into his jacket and took out a card left in his pocket”. Call me”. Then he left with his guards. “Thank you sir!” Bani smiled and followed with her mum. The cocktail was excellent. The hall was full to capacity. The duo enjoyed themselves and satisfied their ego.
At Home
Zai came earlier and crawled into her bed. She rolled into her blanket and slept. Mum came with Bani. She went straight to check on Zai. She found her in bed in deep slumber. She woke her up. “So you have done your wish? You have shunned my invitation and slapped me at my face. It’s payback time. I’ll show you I am your mum. You did not give birth to me. I gave birth to you. I have carried you for nine months in my womb. We shall see!” She barked.
Surveillance Over His House
Haja paid a guy to survey Saul’s house. The guy gave her a detailed report. He explained how Zai visits Saul almost everyday after school.
Saul Is Set Up
Haja is a society woman. She is well connected. She used her connections to set up Saul and got him detained and tortured. She reported that Saul came into her house and stole her trinket box worth D3 million dalasis. The security acted on her word to punish an innocent man. Saul is defenceless. His human right was violated. He had nobody to stand for him but his love Zai who was no match to her mum’s might.
Zai At The Station
Saul managed to send word to his fiancée. Zai came rushing to the station. She was devasted. “What is the problem? What have you done?” She asked. “I was framed up”. “By who?” “I don’t know. Somebody accused me of being a robber. And the security officers refused to tell me who”. Zai became shaky. “Is it true? Have you done it?” She asked. Saul was devasted. “Are you doubting my innocence Zainabou? You of all people? How can I do that? You want to say you still don’t know me? I am finished!” he lamented. “I am sorry. I am confused. I don’t know what to believe or not to believe. I am sorry. “Zainabou! Get to my lawyer! Get to her now! I want to get out of here before the news spread to my office”. “Okay! I’ll do that. I’ll get to your lawyer!” Zai left to get to the lawyer.
Bani Listens To Her Music
Bani was at home enjoying her music. She shuts herself out of the world’s problems.
Zai Comes Home
She explained the incident to Bani. “I suspect mum. I distrust her. She threatened to deal with Saul and this has happened. But Allah is awake! We shall see,” Zai consoled herself. “Don’t say that. Mum cannot do such a mean act”. Bani defended her mum but deep inside she suspected her.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY
Discrimination In The Family
Part 5
Zai Meets Saul’s Lawyer
Zainabou met Saul’s lawyer. She explained what Sulayman told her. “That’s a frame up! Which station is he held?” “The Kairaba!” Zai explained. “But you are very late. I waited for you for a while. I am very busy. I have no time. Where are you going now?” Lawyer Coker asked. “I am going to the University”. “That’s my direction. Hop in!” Zai hopped in and thanked Aminatta for the lift. “Its my pleasure,” she responded.
Bani Begs her Mum
Bani begged mum to release Saul. “He had learnt his lesson. Now let him go”. Bani went on her knees. Haja bluffed and said. “I warned him! Have you ever seen a lamb dancing in the midst of lions and lionesses?” “No!” Bani replied. “Saul dares me! I am just flexing my muscles to show him who I am in Gambian Society. I am a woman of substance. My voice counts. Who are Saul’s aunts and uncles? Leave him there for a while. I want him to run when he hears ‘Ha’ before adding Ja to it much more Ou to Mu!” She is mean, evil and arrogant. Bani was almost in tears. “Mom! He does nothing to you! He is just in love. Please get him released. He is a nice guy”. “No! He has not suffered enough. Leave him there for another week!” “Another week in that horrible condition? You want him to die? No mum! I’ll do something about it!” Bani stressed. Haja gave a cruel laughter. “Do something about it! I want to rest. Give me a break!” She said.
The Police Officers
The Head of the investigating Team have conscience. He went to his superior and tried to reason with him. “Sir!” He saluted and was asked to take a seat. “We have investigated Saul’s case. But he is exonerated. His work mates spoke well of him. Some of his close friends suspected foul play. Let us tread with care well. We should not allow ourselves to be used. The soup can turn sour”. The superior is god-fearing. He listened attentively and concluded the same way as his junior. “If his lawyer comes, let us bail him. Has the woman who brought the complaint appeared?” “No! She has not since she gave the complaint”. The junior answered. “Okay! Do as we have agreed”. “Yes Sir!” The junior saluted and left.
Barrister Aminatta Coker
Barrister Coker is a no-nonsense woman. She is a Human Right Lawyer, highly respected among her peers not only in The Gambia and Africa but Worldwide. She is sharp, deligent and witty. She bailed Saul and drove him to his home. Zai accompanied her to the station. They all returned to Saul’s home. Aminatta spoke. “You are now released on bail. Be very careful. But it still baffled me. How can your future mother-in-law framed you up? Be very careful my friend! Be very careful! She will strike again. But be rest assured! I am ready for her. Nothing good comes easy. Your prize is worth it”. She smiled at Zai. “She is intelligent, witty, sincere and above all loyal, stick to your love. Victory is surely yours”. Aminatta counseled him. “Thank you Barrister. You are right. Nothing good comes easy. I love Zai. Nothing! Nothing! Not even prison can make me leave her. She is my soul mate. We will survive”. The duo kissed each other. “That is the spirit. Stick together to shame the enemy”. She begged to leave. They bade her good bye and she left.
Mom And Her Bad Tricks
Haja came into her sitting room and found Bani entertaining her course mates. She dashed into them and asked them unceremoniously to leave her house. “You!” She pointed to the two guys, one after the other. “Leave my house at once before I release my dogs at you!” The two guys got up and started to leave. “But mom!” Bani started to protest. “They are my course mates”. The guys bade Bani good bye and ran for their lives. “Why did you embarrass my friends like that?” Bani protested. She sulked. “Where is your sister? Is she back?” she tried to trivialize her action. Bani sulked and replied. “She is not back”. Haja entered her room.
Haja Comes To Saul’s House
Haja Oumu visited Saul’s house with her orderly. She asked after Zai in Saul’s house. “An uninvited guest! What evil brought you to my house again? You mean evil! Your presence is evil!” She ignored him and barraged. “Where is my daughter?” Saul became surprised “Evil woman! What are you saying? You harbour my Zai and came her forming the fool! If anything! I say if anything should happen to my dear Saul mater, you’ll be held responsible. You are evil and you know it!” Haja ignored Saul and asked Gas, her Orderly to search Saul’s house inside out, upside down. She saw nothing. Gas came out and announced to her boss that Zainab was not in Saul’s house. She bit her lower lip and hissed. “I’ll be back!” “I’m waiting for you! If anything happens to Zainab you’ll pay with your blood evil woman!” Saul barked at her. He now disrespected and loathed her evil presence. Haja left with Gas.
Haja Is Worried
At home Haja went into her bedroom. She contemplated. “Where is Zainabou? Where could she be? She is strong headed and stubborn. She is not with Saul. He is innocent. He threatened me. I hope my daughter is fine Oh! I hope she does nothing stupid!” Haja prayed. Then her mobile rang. She grabbed it with all the energy she can muster. Zai! Where are you? You scare me to death! Come back home. I mean no harm. You are the only two I get. I work and live for you. Please come back home”. She begged. Haja changed her tone. She wanted her daughter back. “I am not coming now. Later maybe! I have to complete my transactions before I come back”. “Where are you? I can come and collect you. Don’t do this to me my daughter! I need you now. I need you more than ever”. Haja pleaded. Zainab put down the phone.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY
Discrimination In The Family By Amie Sillah
Part 6
Mom Rings Her Friends, Aja Bintou, Aja ‘B’
Mom rang Aja B and explained the situation to her. She calmed her down. Aja ‘B’ is above her status. She is married to a business tycoon, Alhaji Musa. She is blessed with two girls in the marriage. Her eldest daughter, Fatima is married to an oil tycoon based in Saudi Arabia. Isha, her youngest daughter is married to a UN Diplomat. Fatima is a surgeon, also practicing in Saudi Araba. Isha is a computer guru, running her IT business. Aja ‘B’ is also a businesswoman specializing in wedding gowns and wedding accessories. She has influence over Haja Oumu. She tells her home truths. “Zai rang yester night”. “Oh! That’s great. Where is she?” Aja B asked. “She would not tell”. Haja Oumu explained. “Well! Take it easy. At least there is a break through. She called after a month’s silence. I’ll come over to your place”. “Thank you Aja ‘B’. You are really a sister”. Haja Oumu commented.
At Her Office
She told her Secretary to cancel all calls. “I don’t want to talk to anyone. Take important messages only”. “Okay Ma!” said Khadijah her Secretary.
Sulayman And Badara
Badara is Saul’s best friend. He travelled to Europe. He has just arrived. He found him in a sorrowful mode. Saul explained his problem with Haja Oumu. “What about your girl? Is she still focus?” Badara asked. “She is excellent. She has no problem. She loves me with all her heart and soul. Her mum is the only problem”. Saul confirmed. “Has her mum have any influence over her?” “No! She has no influence over her. Infact, she is rebelling. And is not living with her family at the moment”. Saul explained. “Fine! Give her all your support. Get her positive blood relatives on your side and move on”. Badara advised. “Take the bull by the horn and marry your babe. Lean on me. I’ll carry you on, all the time! Cheer up!” Badara shook up Saul.
Bani And Her Mom
Bani told her mom some home truths. “Mom! I cannot understand you. You used to be a warm, kind, accommodating and compassionate person. You never discriminated against any body. You were a team leader and love working in a team. But no more mom! You are different. You hate, scorn and loath the poor and the needy. All because of your promotion! You are climbing the success ladder. But he careful mom! Be careless! The old adage says when you are climbing up don’t malice those you pass on the ground. In case you start falling down they will hold you high up not to come crashing down! I am fed up with everything. Zai left became of your nagging. I might leave as well! This house is becoming too hot for me!” Bani threatened. “Shut up foolish girl! If you want to leave, leave, but not use anyone as a escape goat. Your cases are different. Zai challenged my authority and decided to leave by herself. Your case is different but if you want to leave, take at the way!” She pointed towards the door.
Three Months On
Zainab appeared. Musa, the gateman first welcomed her. He was excited to see his small madam. “Welcome Miss Zainab! We all miss you”. “Thank you! Is anybody in?” Zai asked. “Yes! Madam is in”. “Thank you!” Zai walked towards the big house. Musa exclaimed with amusement. “Oh Miss Zainab! Madam will be happy. She is worried to death!”
Mom Meets Zainab Mom met Zainab as she entered the sitting room while Zainab came in. Mom cautiously greeted her. She is scared for her to leave again. Zainab returned her greetings in a polite manner and went into her room. Mama changed her tone and became more accommodative. She talked to herself and expressed self pity. “I want to better their lives. You’ll not kill me! Life is very short!” she grumbled.
The Pregnancy
Zainab gave the shocking news. “I am pregnant!” She explained. “Preg what? For who?” Mama asked. Zainab refused to talk.
Saul Enters The House
Mom threatened to kill Zainab. Then Saul entered the sitting room. “You’ll not accept him mom but he is my choice the father of my child!” Zainab confessed. “You have to abort that ****** in your womb! You cannot bring shame into our family. I have nothing to do with this pauper or his unborn child. You’ll have to abort it or else I’ll commit two murders”. Then she left and went into her room in a rage. Bani gave Zai solidarity. She caressed her. “It’s okay sister! I’ll talk to her”. “Thank you!” Sulay responded, Zainab nodded her head. Saul cuddled Zainab into his arms and consoled and reassured her. Zainab cried over his arms.
Mom Pays A Visit To Haja ‘B’
Mom paid a quick visit to her best Pal, Haja ‘B’. She announced that Zai have returned home. “Allah be praised! That’s good news”. Haja ‘B’ announced with excitement. “Wait a minute! It is not like that”. “What is it again?” “Zainab is pregnant for him!” “What?” Haja Bintou consoled her friend. “ Nature has a way of solving it’s problem. If the two are meant to be no one can put them asunder!” “What do you mean?” Mama asked “Let them be! What else do you want to do?” Haja Bintou asked. “She has to abort the pregnancy and give up her relationship with Saul!” “But that is impossible and you know it! It is against our religion, even the pregnancy before marriage. I am sorry. Your refused to join the two lovers you cause it. Now! You must repent. Repent your ways! Give the youths their chance, let them be! Zainabou is over 18 years. By law she can take care of herself. Please my dear friend! Let your children be. When she delivers her baby, let Saul marry her”. Mama jumped up. “Over my dead body! I’ll not allow it. You are selfish. Do you ask what type of work Saul does?” She roared. “That is immaterial! What Saul does for a living is left to him and his wife”. Haja Bintou defended her point. “What about if he is an armed robber?” Mama asked. “Saul is not! And you know it! He is a decent guy working as an accountant at the Continental Bank. I bank with his institution. “Haja defended her point. “He is an ordinary accountant. A human counting machine! I’ll not allow her marry my daughter. How about your two daughters Fatima and Isha who are married to an oil tycoon and A UN Diplomat respectively?” Mama challenged Haja ‘B’. Did I Bintou. She laughted at her. “Choose their spouses? You know I didn’t leave your daughter. Let her be! And please don’t do any stupid thing. Forgot about abortion. That is out of it. Abortion is dangerous. You daughter can lose her life and get barren for life. I do not support abortion unless it threatens the lady or the mother”. Haja Bintou emphasize her point. Mama was very angry with her friend and mento. They did not see eye to eye. Angrily, she left Haja Bintou’s house and went back home.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY
Discrimination In The Family By Amie Sillah
Bani Meets Mr. Right
Chernor Baba alias Prince Charles rang Bani. At first, she was baffled. She never thought in her life that a rich guy could remember her much more to talk about giving her a call. She answered the phone excitedly. Che invited her to a date. They went to an exortic restaurant. They enjoyed the food and drink. Che invited her to a shopping spree to America. It sound too good to be true.
Mama And Bani
She explained to her. “Can you remember Prince Charles at your cocktail party?” “The mega rich guy? Who would forget such a person? I do remember. What about him? “Mama” asked. He invited me for dinner and has announced his intention to take me to New York for a shopping spree”. “What did you tell him?” Mama asked. “I agree”. “Right! That’s my daughter! This is the type of guy I want you to hang out with. He will take care of all our luxurious needs. Opportunity knocks only but once. Make hay while the sun shines is my motherly advice to you”. “Thank you mom. I’ll do exactly what you advice”. Bani took out a cheque of D200, 000. “Cash it into your saving account. You’ll need it at an opportune time”. Mama advised.
The Shopping Spree
Bani went to New York with Che. They shop ‘New York,’ household items wedding dress, suit and accessories, and every other thing they think necessary for their marriage life. The heavy items were sent by freight. They bought along the light items packaged into many suitcases. Mama was overwhelmed when Bani entered the house with the goodies. “What! All these for you?” Mama asked. “Yes mama! These are not all. The heavy items are coming by freight”. She showed mama a chegue of half a million dalasis. Mama hugged and praised her daughter. “Now you are talking my daughter, put the half a million into your account immediately”. She advised. Bani agreed.
Zainab And Sulayman
Zainab came with her husband Saul to apologize to her mum. They brought along some gifts for mama. Zainab went on her knees to beg her mom. “Mama forgives us if we have offended you with our follies. We love ourselves. We apologize for Allah’s sake”. Mama is mean and spiteful. She is full of revenge. She neither forgives nor forgets. She asked Zai to get up. “Get up! You owe me no apology. I was just carrying motherly duty which you rejected totally. You have your life and I have mine. I wanted a good life for both of you, yourself and your eldery sister. My only prayer is never turn back to me for help. I’ll not give it to you. Take away your gifts. I don’t need them. You have chosen your path. So be it! No future assistance. Am sorry, good bye!” she rudely left them gaping at the sitting room.
Bani Enjoys Herself
Bani and Che are enjoying themselves hopping from one exclusive place to another. Bani is high up in the heavens. The events are too good to be true. In one of the outings Che proposed to her. He gave her an engagement ring. Che is an Aku Marabout. Bani was overexcited. She accepted immediately. This moment became a dream come true for Bani.
Bani At Home
Bani came home quite excited. She shave mama her finger. “What?” She exclaimed. “Has he?” “Yes! He proposed and I immediately accepted”. Bani responded. “Whaw! That great!” Mama exclaimed. “Your ring is dazzling like a star”. “It is a diamond ring”. Mama hugged and congratulated her daughter replied. “This is what I wanted for both of you. You have made it. Keep it up my beautiful daughter! When you marry the right man you became a winner for life. Che is Mr. Right. You have won a jackpot!” Mama confirmed.
First Class Marriage
Bani and Che’s marriage was first class in every meaning of the word. It was first class, V.I.P from beginning to end. Every activity was by invitation except the mosque marriage, where believers who attended the mosque became part of the ceremony. They could not be sent away on class basis. That is unheard of.
The reception party was exclusive and V.I.P. The present given by the class was a fortune. They went to Hawaii for a honeymoon. The couples were in the heavens. Che adored Bani. They loved themselves. Mama bragged and boasted about them. To her, they were the only couples that mattered.
Aja Binta And Mama
Aja Binta went on a business trip to Singapore when Zai gave birth to her twins. Mama did not inform her about it. She heard it from friends when she visied Mama. She reprimanded her. “Zai gave birth to twins. And you did not inform me at least by text which will cost you very little”. Mama reacted. “I have nothing to do with that **** and dog. They are out of my system. I care less about the puppies!” Haja B. exclaimed”!! You referred to your daughter, her husband and kids as ****, dog and puppies? You are mean and wicked. Allah will punish you. Ishallah! If you don’t repent. You should be right now with your daughter. She is nursing twins as her first children. She is inexperience. You have to help out and encourage her to practice (optimal) exclusive breastfeeding. The kids are your first grand children for Allah’s Sake. One of them your namesake. Your daughter and her husband love and adore you. That’s why they name their daughter after you. You snob and scorn them. You refuse their gifts. You metaphorically slapped their faces. Change your ways girl! You call yourself a devout muslim but you are not practicing what you preach”. Mama started to make some excuses. “I am busy. I have no time for those wretches. What about my job?” “Nonsense! Take a month’s casual leave and show your daughter what to do. Make amends and then come back to your job. You are the boss”. Haja B advised. Mama was cornered. She has no more excuses.
The Convoy
Che travels in a Convoy of expensive cars. Mama went to town and saw his convoy. She tried to stop it but was ignored. She rang Che from the mobile and explained herself. “My in-law! I saw your convoy in town and I tried to stop you but you wouldn’t”. Che got annoyed. “But in-law! That is not etiquette! That is undone. Never try to stop me in the street again. I’ll not do it even for the Queen of England. Excuse me!” Mama was rebuked. She felt embarrassed. “What is wrong?” She shrugged her shoulders. “I was just trying to show him my presence. I don’t need a lift. I have my official car”. She soliloqued.
To be cont.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY Discrimination In The Family By Amie Sillah
Continued
The Rich Household A dream has come true for Bani. Her husband is into all sorts of lucrative business, oil exploration, diamond trading, manufacturing etc. He has offices in The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Angola, South Africa and Brussels. He is filthy rich. They love themselves. Bani lack nothing. As they were relaxing Mama called and asked Bani to come over and help her with some shopping. “Can you please come over and help me with some shopping? I want to travel to the village to do some little trading”. “Okay! Hang up. I’ll get to you later”. Bani came to her husband. “Whom were you talking to?” Che asked. It’s mama. She asked me to accompany her to the market to buy some goods for trading in the village”. “And what did you tell her?” He asked. “I told her to hang up while I ask for your opinion about it”. “That’s right. My candid opinion is no. She has to know and appreciate whose wife you are as from now. You don’t go to market. Your servants do”. “Okay darling! I’ll let her now, thanks! Can I serve your food?” He caressed his stomach and said, “Yes! I’ll do with that. Thanks my love!” Bani got back to her mom and disappointed her. “Am sorry mom, Che does not like the idea. It’s the phone. I’ll explain more when I see you”. And she hangs the phone. “What! Your own mother? You need your husband’s permission before assisting your own mother? Okay! We shall see”. Mama hangs off the telephone. Mom Comes To The Rich Household Guards on duty have to take particulars before one is allowed into the premises. There is a reason for that. Che is an international businessman. He has friends and foes alike. His life is insured and highly protected. He lives a secluded life. Everybody has to sign the visitor’s book no matter whom. Coming to his house is by appointment and invitation. Everything about his life is formal, you are only allowed into his residence if he wants to see you. Mama came to see them and was asked to sign the visitor’s book. She became pissed off. This is her in-law’s residence, a member of his family, why should she sign? She protested. “Why should I sign? Didn’t you know me? I am your boss’s mother-in-law; let me in before you lose your job”. She insisted. The guard was polite enough to explain. “Mama sign oh! This is the routine whether rich or poor. I am a poor fellow. I don’t want to lose my job. I have two wives and fifteen kids. I am sorry. You must try to understand”. He pleaded. Mama could not believe her ears. She dialed to Bani to enquire. “Bani girl! I am at your gate. Your stupid guard asked me to sign a visitor’s book before am allowed to enter your premises. Is that so? Me! Your mother!” She paused for her reply. “That is so mama. This is the routine. It applies to everybody rich or poor”. “If I don’t?” Mama defied. “Then no entry, mom. That is the rule no exception”. She put off her mobile. She was drinking and chatting with Che at their house bar. “Who is that?” Che asked. “Mama!” Bani replied. “What does she want at this time of the night?” “I don’t know”. Was Bani’s short reply. She hated mama’s troubles and she feared Che’s wrath. “She is not welcome”. Bani supported her husband’s stance. Mama Comes In Mama came and met the couples at the steps to the entrance into the Manson. She was tense but managed to greet both of them and went straight to the point. “My in-law! I cannot understand your routine. I have to sign to enter into your residence?” Mama asked a direct question. Che answered unequivocally. “That’s not a big deal. Even presidents sign to enter my premises. Everybody rich or poor observe the protocol. And you have not call to say you are coming. You cannot barge into my family like that. You have to be invited”. Che commented rudely. Mama got a rude shock. Che went back into the house. Bani timidly welcomed her mom. Mama protested. “I don’t like your husband’s reception. He is rude and impolite. I cannot allow my in-law to treat me as thrash”. Bani cautioned her. “Mama! Don’t complain oh! This is the type of husband you wanted me to marry. You have to comply. Don’t invite his anger and wrath. I am very afraid of him. If he is angry, he is not easily contained.” “Nonsense! I am complying because of you. But let it be clear to both of you. I cannot be treated as a maid in my daughter’s house. Now you are the lady Diana and he is the Prince Charles? You want to practice your high class on me. It is undone. We shall see!” Mama posited. She was quite upset. She sensed that she is unwelcome into this house but she will not give up without a fight. Zai With Saul Zainab married her choice. They loved themselves and lived a simple life. Zainab worked as administrator in a private company. Saul worked as an accountant at the Continental Bank. They hired an elderly nanny to look after their twins. The Unexpected Visitor Mama barged into them unannounced. They were surprised to see her. Saul commented. “Ah Mama! You did not tell us you are coming? It’s a big surprise.” Zai rushed into the sitting room and manifested the same surprise. “Well! Here I am.” “How is every one Mama? Is everything okay?” They asked. “Everyone is fine and they send their greetings.” “You are welcome mom! You are welcome!” they both said. Zai ushered her into her room and ensured she have a hot shower. She slept the night. Mama’s Troubles Before she awoke Zai ensured she got a hot shower for her and prepared her breakfast. Mama took her hot shower then came out into the sitting room. Her first complaint was about lack of an AC. Then she asked for all the newspapers available for the day. Saul was going to work but she insisted that he goes to the street and buy her all the newspapers before proceeding to work. Saul has to rush to do that. Then she complained about the food. She was not interested in a dry breakfast. She requested for chicken or beef salad with plenty of vegetables and also a hot beverage drink. Zai protested and said she eats what is available or nothing else but Saul would not hear of it. “She is our guest. Take some money and buy her breakfast at Mamy’s kiosk.” He pleaded with Zai. “She is your mother.” Then he hurried to work. He commutes to work. He was lucky to be given a lift by a colleague. Mama criticized the couple’s poverty. “Poverty! Poverty everywhere! These *****s cannot even afford an ordinary fan.” She grumbled to herself before Zai came with her breakfast.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY Discrimination In The Family By Amie Sillah (continued)
Mama With Soul And Zai
The couples got fed up with mama’s beckering and troubles. She criticized every bit of their lives. Mama came to help the couples nurse their twins but she practiced the contrary. Every morning she woke up late, took time for her make up and asked for an expensive breakfast. “I do not want junk food. I am on a highly vegetable and fruits diet with high protein and little carbohydrate. I know you are poor but for me to stay you have to provide it or else I quit. I’ve not come here for unnecessary sacrifice”. She threatened her daughter and son-in-law. Zainab challenged her mum. “You have no use here. You don’t look after my babies. You don’t care about us. Mama, you are trouble. It definitely makes no difference whether you stay or not”. Sulay took a low profile. He left Zai to iron it out with her mum. The Rich Household Che’s busy schedule did not allow him to visit Zainab since she put to bed her twins. He decided to give Bani a cheque of D300, 000 for her sister. She exclaimed. “All this for Zai? Oh my darling sunshine!” She embraced her hussy and gave him a passionate lip kiss. Bani is very happy. “Sweetie! Your visa is ready. You’ll travel to US next week”. “Oh!” She jumped with excitement. “America! Here I am!” She bounced on her settee. She is a fulfilled woman. The Twins Crying The twins were crying. Sulay came into the room to check. He found mama making up, unattending the babies. He went to console them. He changed their nappies. Mama started grumbling. “The room is stuffy. No AC, no fan. Your low income would not allow you to enjoy life. I warned my daughter but she would not listen. But if you don’t install an AC or at least buy a fan I’ll leave. I am comfortable in my home. I cannot come her and suffer. “Sulay felt the pain and humiliation. Mama’s arrogance was unbearable. But as his in-law he cannot exchanged words with her. He let sleeping dog to lie. Mama Leaves Mama left unceremoniously when the couples went to work. The senior nanny told them when they returned home. “She just packed her things and told me to tell you when you come from work”. Aunty Nancy told the couples. “Good riddance to bad rubbish!” Zainab gave a sign of relief. The Two Sisters Bani came to visit her sister. She came with the cheque. They discussed about their impossible mum. “Mama came her with her rigid set rules. She insulted and humiliated us. She refused to take care of the twins. Her taunts became unbearable. With Allah’s intervention, she packed her things and left when we went to work. Mama is trouble. She is getting worst as she ages”. Zainab explained. “Oh Mama!” Bani expressed. “Let us move to a more interesting topic. How is Che and his business?” Zai asked. “Busy, busy as usual”. Then she gave her the cheque with Che’s apology. “Here is a cheque. Che is ashamed that he could not pay you a visit since you put to bed. He is sorry”. Zai thanked him. “This is too much. We are grateful. Che is an international business tycoon. He has no time but we appreciate his generosity. May Allah replenish his well of wealth. He will never be found lacking”. Zai kissed her sister. Then Sulay entered. Saul Enters “Oh! What a great visitor! The two sisters on childhood secrets!” He hugged Bani. “Long time! How is Che? No time, busy, busy as usual”. “Say it again! He is travelling to Brazil tomorrow. I don’t expect him until the end of the month. But am travelling to the US next week. I am going to put to bed there”. “Oh! Safe journey in advance”. Saul said. “Thank you!” Bani replied. Zai showed her husband the cheque. “Oh! It’s too much! Thank him for us. Tell him we appreciate the gesture”. “You are welcome!” Bani replied. Zai asked Bani to excuse her. “Am going to serve his lunch. He is tired from work”. “Let me join you to learn to serve Che better. You are an expert in the field. You were there before me”. They gave a girlish giggle and both entered the inner room. Now the sisters are very closed. A Job Offering As the couples were relaxing Zai told her husband. “Darling, Che is offering you a managerial position in one of his companies. The packages include an official car, residence and fringe benefits for our family. What do you say to it?” Saul hesitated. He was uncomfortable. He answered. “Thank you sunshine, don’t say I am turning down your sister’s offer. It is great of them but darling, I have a bright future. I am a graduate, an accountant. I have prospects. I am to travel soon on some professional course. I am more comfortable with that than working for Che. I want independence and respect. I want to work it out. That is more dignified. Say it diplomatically to Bani. Don’t make her feel we are rejecting their offer. They are nice to us. They mean no harm”. He caressed his wife. “Okay darling! I understand. I’ll put it neatly. I respect your position. It is noble”. He kissed her. “Am I not lucky for having a loving, caring and understanding wife? I love you with my body and soul. You are my soulmate”. The couples kissed again. They are one. They love themselves.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY Discrimination In The Family Part 10 By Amie Sillah
Mom At Home
Mama came home earlier than expected. Haja ‘B’ rang her and got her at home. “Where are you speaking from?” She asked. “Ofcourse! At home”. “You came earlier than expected. You spent only one week when you should have spent a month. Your casual leave is eight weeks,” Haja ‘B’ challenged her. How can I spend my precious eight weeks with those poverty stricken fools? Even an ordinary ceiling fan is not in their home. I warned her not to marry poverty. But she did. Now she is reaping what she has sown”. Mama was hard and adamant. Haja ‘B’ told her some home truth. Haja ‘B’ With Mama Haja drove to Mama’s home. She told her some home truth. “You are mean and wicked, your daughter has made her choice which should be respected. You discriminate her to the hilt but she still loves and honours you. Change your ways before it is too late”. Mama was ashamed but she pretended to be non-charlant. Aunty Sally Visits The Family Aunty Sally is Saul’s mother. She travelled to Senegal when Zai put to bed. She came directly from her trip. She decided to stay for three months to take care of the babies. She is compassionate and pleasant. She is in great contrast with Mama. Zai loves her mother-in-law. She taught her all womanhood tricks - how to take care of her twins, how to take care of herself and how to take care of her husband in bed. “Indigenous knowledge is quite useful. It should not be despised,” Aunty advised. “Aunty, I do not despise indigenous knowledge but the fact and fiction should be separated. Positive knowledge should be harnessed but negative knowledge should be discarded”. “Well said,” Aunty posited. Mama Resumes Duty Mama resumed her duty. She was well dressed. Her co-workers teased her. “You look like an under sixteen. You are cute mama,“ said her secretary. She laughed. “During my time I competed in a beauty competition and I won. I am still cute. I’ll not leave myself shabby. I’ll wear what I have,” she boasted. The Phone Rings The phone rang and who was speaking? “Mama! It’s me Bani. I am speaking from New York. I have put to bed a bouncing baby boy”. Mama jumped with excitement. “What! That’s great my daughter. How are you and your baby?” “We are fine. I’ll leave the hospital in an hour’s time. I am going back to my hotel”. “When will you be back in The Gambia? I wish I was there”. “In a month’s time. Che will come for us from Argentina. I miss you mom. Bye!” “Bye! Bye I miss you too,” Mama shouted at the end of the line. Mama Informs Haja B “B! it’s me. Bana have put to bed a bouncing baby boy in New York. She will be here in a month’s time. I cannot wait. I am very excited”. Oh! I am happy for you. Allah be praised! I wish them the best and pray they return home safely”. “Thank you!” said Mama from the other line. ‘Bambaneh’ (Nursing A Baby) In our society, this is a best practice when mothers, mothers-in-law help their children nurse their babies and also teach them some indigenous knowledge about child rearing, how to take care of oneself after birth and to resume your marital duties. Mama could not wait to ‘bambaneh’ for the Gumanehs. At The Gumanehs’ Mama parked her car at Che’s parking lot. She entered the main house. She has come to nurse her grandson, Chernor Gumaneh (Che Junior). Che Enters Che entered his compound. He found his parking lot occupied. “Whose car is this?” He asked Ebrima, a security personnel. “Its your mother-in-law, Mama”. “Why do you let her?” Che querried his security. Ebrima did not reply. Che Complains Che entered his mansion. He kissed Bani and then turned and greeted Mama. Then he complained. “Mama! Your parking is wrong. Nobody shares my parking space. Call your driver to return your car home”. Bani became edgy and mute. Che called the retinue of house helps. “Awa Jarrai, Fatou, Amie and Jatou, come here! Take Mama’s luggage to the Boys’ Quarters,” he ordered. Mama Querries “Why?” Mama querried. “Because No visitor stays in my main house, only my family members stay in my mansion,” was Che’s rude reply. “Am I not a family member? Am I not your mother-in-law?” Che refused to respond. He walked away. That was a rude shock to Mom. She felt humiliated”. Mama you have to cope. This is the rule. You wanted me to marry a rich guy. I did. Now! Why are you complaining? I don’t want to upset Che. His anger is disastrous.“ Bani sent away her house helps. “All of you! Go back to the kitchen,“ she ordered. “I am not your househelp Bani! Get that into your head, you and your arrogant husband! You are trying me to the hilt. I don’t like being discriminated against,” Mama protested. Comment: Mama has easily forgotten how she maltreats Zainab and Saul. Sulkily she went to stay at the Boys Quarters.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY Discrimination In The Family Part 11 By Amie Sillah
At The Boys’ Quarters Mama stayed at the Boys’ Quarters very tense. She saw herself as being discriminated against. I am a high class lady, a permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education. Why are my daughter and my son in law treating me like thrash? Che said only his family members stay in the mansion! Am I not a part of his family – his mother in law? This is insulting! A whole me staying at the Boys’ Quarters? I’ll not accept it! I’ll fight back!” She swore. Her heart was heated. She awaited for the slightest provocation to spark.
Alex And Mama Alex is the chief house boy. He came to call mama to accompany him to the mansion to bath Che Junior. Alex is pleasant with all smiles. After exchanged greetings he said, “Mama, Madam asked me to call you to go and bath Junior.” Mama gave a sarcastic smile and looked at her watch. She showed it to Alex. “What is the time?” It was eleven a.m. “This time! I woke up since six a.m.; seven a. m I went to the mansion Madam’s door was closed. Now it is already late. I have dressed up but I can compromise a bit. Asked your madam to bring her son to the Boys’ quarters to get him bathe.” Alex sensed trouble. Meekly, he went back to the mansion.
On His Way, On the Steps Coming up the steps, he met Che coming out. He enquired. “I thought you were sent to call mama to come and bathe my son?” “Yes! But Mama said it is already late. She has already dressed up. Instead, Madam should take Che Junior to the Boys quarters to be bathe.’ Che jumped in excitement. “What? My baby! My son to be taken to the Boys’ quarters to be bathe? What a cheek! Is she mad? This woman has grown wings. She has to be fixed.” Che rushed to the Boys’ quarters in full rage.
Confrontation Che met Mama at the verandah filing her nails. “My in-law! What have you told Alex?” “Nothing!” mama replied. “You told him to ask my wife to bring my son to the Boys’ Quarters? What a cheek! That is insolence. I’ll not take it from anyone, not even you. This is your last warning. You better behave yourself. I have taken it up to here.” Che touched his chin. “Be warned!” As he started to walk away, Bani came running “What is the problem?” Che explained to his wife.
Bani Scolds Mama Bani confronted Mama. “Why mama? Why? You are misbehaving. To stay here you have to comply with the rules. No flouting of orders. I don’t want your trouble. You have already been warned. I dread Che’s wrath. It can be explosive. You wanted me to marry a rich guy. It has happened. Why complain? Don’t bring me trouble oh!” Mama protested. “Why are you people troubling me? You relegated me to the Boys’ Quarters. I came without resistance. I woke up early, came to the mansion and found you still asleep. I came back and took care of myself. You came late to ask me to bath Junior. I asked Alex for Che to be brought to me to be bathe and your silly, uncultured husband protested. You asked me to stay at the Boys’ Quarters, me your mother but your son, my grand child should not be brought to the Boys’ Quarters. I have taken it up to here with both of you. Enough is enough! I’ll take it no more. I am an adult. You cannot treat me as a child.” Mama protested. “Then behave like an adult!” Bani posited. “What if I refuse to bath Che?” “Then you leave our premises. I don’t want your trouble Mama. I don’t want your trouble! If you want to leave, leave in peace. Don’t try to offend anyone.” Bani warned. Mama sulked. “You want to treat me as your maid. I’ll not accept it. I’ll not accept it! I came because of my grandson! That’s why I am accepting all these insults from you.” Then mama went to bath Junior.
Eating In the Patio Mama ate at the classic sitting room. Bani came shaking. Mama was again inviting trouble. Che will flare up when he sees her. Bani begged Mama to go to the Dinning “Mama! This is undone. No one eats at any of our sitting rooms not to talk of our classic patio. It is an explosion if Che meets you here.” Mama jumped with excitement. She rebelled. “Che this! Che that! Who is Che? God? When I came you discriminated against me and took me to the Boys’ quarters. You showed me where to sleep but you cannot show me where to eat. I’ll eat here and here alone.”
The Show Down An argument ensured. It became heated. Bani talked back to her mum. “Zai did the best. She ignored you and follows her heart. You are wicked, mean and impossible!” “What!” Mama gave Bani a nasty slap. Che came down just in time. He was shocked. “What? A nursing mother! My wife! You slap my wife in my home? You dared me after being warned? Leave my premises right now! And never come back again!” He called Alex to help Mama packed her things. Mama fought back. “Useless man without manners! Uncultured! Untrained! Rude and sulky! I am gone. I came from a home. I don’t blame you. I blame my daughter.” She pointed to Bani. “I have disowned you. Never come back to me if he finally dumps you!” “Mama! Go! Go with your troubles! I prefer to die in hell than come back to you!” Alex wanted to help her pack. She pushed him away. She packed her things and left in her car. She refused to send the car away since Che ordered her to do so.
At Her Office Mama got the rude shock of her life. It was like a dream. Unbelievable! “This is untrue! Unbelievable! What is happening to me?” She rang Zai but there was no response. She thought they were also avoiding her. She became frustrated and disillusioned. “What is happening? They too are avoiding me! Is it a conspiracy?” she asked in dismay.
At Haja B’s House She went straight to Haja B’s house for comfort and reassurance. Mama has already taken voluntary retirement. She has already left the government house. She regretted not building her house. “I have no where to call my own. I was stupid and foolish. Government house is not my house. While I went partying and wasting money, I completely neglected my building. I was banking on my rich daughter. Look how she have treated me, a whole me as a thrash!” She sobbed. Haja gave her courage. “What are friends for? I love you Oumu. We have been friends since our school days. My house is your house. You can stay as long as you wish. Feel free and comfortable. I am the only occupant of this huge self-contain duplet.”
The Couples Came Zai and Saul bought a double decked duplet at the housing scheme they relocated there. They wanted to take mama by surprise. That’s why she cannot reach they by phone. They came for her.
The Surprise Mama felt great relief when she saw her younger daughter and her husband. After all they have not abandon her. She thought they have also abandoned her. They greeted mama and her friend. They announced that they have come for her. “Mama! We have come for you.” “To go where?” She asked with a surprise. “To go to our home.” Your home?” “Yes! Our home!” She hesitated. “You want me back after everything I’ve done to you?” “Why not? Allah forgives us our trespasses, who are we not to forgive others who trespass against us. You are forgiven. You will always be our dear mum. We are very sorry for what have happen. Please take it in good faith. Everything will be alright Ishallah!” Madam Bintou winked her eyes in approval. “Okay! Let me go in to get my luggage.” The couples thanked Madam Bintou for standing up for Mama. “Thank you Aunty for taking care of mama.” “Its my pleasure. Thank you also for taking care of your parent. Allah will pay and reward you. No matter what, a parent is a parent. That is African culture. As the saying goes, a parent is like a rock. If you fell at it you get crushed, if it hits you, you are equally crushed. Allah will bless you.’ Madam Bintou prayed for them.
The Greatest Surprise Mama thought she was going to the old home but instead the couples drove her in a new porsh car into a porsh area of the surburbs. The car halted at a flashy newly built double decked duplet. Mama is full of surprise waiting to be enlightened. Zai laughed and ushered Mama into their flashy newly built duplet. “Mama is this our house. We bought it.” “What about the Car?” Mama asked. “We own the car as well. Saul has been doubly promoted to the position of General Manager of his bank. He will be traveling shortly to the U.S for a two years refresher course. I’ll be traveling with him. A college position is already secured for me. I want to do my masters. You’ll be staying here while we travel to the U.S. There is a maid and a houseboy at your disposal. Feel free mum. Saul have also made plans to build you a house at your empty plot.” Mama shed tears of joy and shame. She hugged the couples and prayed for them. “You have really kill me with shame. All that glitters is not gold. I have got my blessing where I least expected it. Nothing is static. The rich household has rejected me. The poor household have transformed to the least I have expected. May Allah bless you and forever fill your wealth fountain. But as for Bani and her husband may I never meet them even in the heavens.” Comment: Never discriminate between members of your family. The morrow is prename with surprises.
