Tourism is at the moment a very important employment and foreign exchange earning sector for The Gambian people and the economy
With the exchange rate now at 33.97 Dalasi to the Pound what effect is this going to have to the tourist trade and Gambia as a whole?

I read what you have written and I am sure that you have been following all the posts on this subject......the answer?
A bleak lookout for the economy and the tourist industry,If you want to put in a bid to buy a hotel now, I expect you may be able to buy one in GBP or Dollars quite cheaply! |

toubab1020, a bleak outlook for the tourist industry, have you been following my postings on flights, if they cn't fil the flights prices drop, o one is visitn a circul ensues. i will check on the internet over the weekend and if a i see a big dropp in prices i will worry, because that will mean less visitors to gambia. the tour operators are already committed t the this season but how many will come back next season. |

The tour operators are already committed, but can they sell hotel rooms and packages? it would appear that as there are many available cheap seats on planes that they have decided to cut their losses and dump the seats that they would have used for their hotel guests because the bookings are not coming in,it would be very interesting to hear from a Bantaba reader who is in the tour operator buisness and who could confirm (or not!) my theory |

less tourists, means less money in circulation, less tourist means less spending in hotels, bars restaurants, craft markets, tours etc. the next week will be the one to watch. |

I saw in wednesday's Metro round trips advertised by Air Brussels to Senegal,Gambia,Kenya and Uganda starting from £420 in the Metro Newspaper. This is an interesting development don't you think?

this is interesting becuase it means they are looking outside there local market for customers , they are changing their marketing and wanting to attract new customers. No harm, but £420 is not cheap it can be that price for gambian experience |

The Gambia Hotel Association has called an emergency meeting this week at the atlantic hotel. The hotel managers are concerned and will be badly affected by the current exchange rate as they are all paid in foreign currencies. If e.g, Gambia experience paid you £1000 pound which they could exchange for around D50,000 , now they can only get around D35,000 or less from it. They are losing almost half!.. |

It has to move upwards soon. Low exhange rates indicate both a strength and a weakness ... but strength for whom? |
