One of the biggest problem in Gambia is energy production/usage

- Day Light Saving
- Solar Power

What is the current energy situation in Gambia? Problems? Solutions? Any discussion done?

there is plenty of opportunity to operate solar power in Gambia, but it is a matter of doing, money and time. I have looked into solar power panels in gambia but the do not seem good quality, i would problem ship mine over.

there are about 3 or 4 companies that I know of that deliver solarsystems in the Gambia. The quality of the panels should have to be good and about the same for each company, the problem is (and thats what make them expensive) they are very breakable even the smallest invisable crack gives a big loss in power. Most time things get unpacked by unschooled people, even the slightest knock or bumb or rough tough is enough to create a crack, sellers will not tell you and sell a lightly damaged panel to you anyway.
Another thing they are good at is cheating you with the wire, cupper wire is expensive so they will try to sell you thinner wires then you agree on. The ticker the wire the lower the resistance and the longer you can use the electrical power , so check before you go what is the best wire and try to control that they use that in Gambia, I know different families who are cheated both with wire and panels.

For the whole country I dont know how far they are with the big Sambangalou dam, but Gambia should benefit from the hydro electrical power if finished ( but bad for gambian agriculture see posting about this project)

My own very ambitious plan, try to get help from Europe and Worldbank to finance a hydro electrical powerplant in Gambia itself.Environment is the fashionword nowadays!!
Build it on that place where the big mouth from the river narrows, if you build a dam you can use it at the same time as bridge, the big mouth from the river will squeeze in giant quantities of salt water at high tide, at low tide you let it run through turbines to create electricity, this proces has one other very positive side effect it will reduce tidal levels in the interior a bit and thus pushing back the salinity levels of the river, nowadays the water is salt more then 275 kilometers upstream and not suitable for irrigation.
By a reduction more water can be used as irrigation and more agriculture can be done

OK its not Solar or free, but it's a step in the right direction, slowly the promises are being kept, but can the people afford to pay for this service?

A piece from the president that I missed from the same publication.
