Ousman Sembene had made many interesting movies among them "Xala", "Mandabi" and "Ceddo". Some of his movies were so controversial that they were banned in Senegal. May his soul rest in peace.
--------

One of the pioneers of African film-making - Senegalese writer Sembene Ousmane - has died after a long illness at the age of 84.

Sad news as he was commonly regarded as a "Father of African Cinema" .
One of his latest films were Borom Sarret (about a cart owner) and Faat-Kine, about a divorced woman making carrier in male-dominated field.
His latest(?) was from 2004, Mooladé and is about female circumsion, set in a small village. Unfortunately, I didn´t watch it. Sembene was invited to come to Stockholm but refrained due to his age.
He also published several short stories and novels.

Myriam Nyang, one of the cast members of "xala" now resides in the same state with me. Condolences to the Sembene family.

Senegal is endowed with talented persons in diverse fields. Some of them encountered severe suppression. May the Sembene family have the fortitude to bear the loss of a dear memember of their blessed family.
