A friend of mine is sick with Malaria. He has a fever and hasnt eaten for three days. I want him to see a doctor. How much will it cost for him to see the doctor and then how much for medication? What medication is available?
What self help advice would you give to someone with a recurrence of Malaria. He is not a very strong person healthwise as he is poor and therefore his diet is very poor, even by Gambian standards. If he doesnt work he doesnt eat, so it becomes a vicious cycle. He lives at the coast and is a rasta, his family are in Soma.
I am seriously worried that one day Malaria will kill him. Can anyone give me advice about the best way to help him?
I am going to send some money tonight for his treatment. Please give me a realistic idea of how much it will cost.
Thanks everyone!

I am hoping a friend of mine at the coast will go and check on him to see how he is and then I will send money if needed.
I HATE having to mistrust everyone. |

Jambo. I was going to make a posting just like yours Jambo but didn't.I have been asked by a man to buy milk for his baby as he hadn't eaten,I asked to see the baby,on our way the man disappeared,I knew the area well so no problem for me,it was obvious that there was no baby in need.I would agree with your pricing usually 2 injections and pills, recovery is about 3 days. |

Agreed - malaria injections are not too pricey and are adminisered by many, many local health centres (probably don't need a doctor). If your friend is really, really sick - then MRC - is a good place to go. And it's free - just the cost of transport to get there. |

MRC is good but be sure to get there EARLY 6am is probably too late to get a ticket to see the Dr.that day. |

Gambia Bev- Just be careful who you send your money to, people will become reliable on you, then disappointed when you decide you can no longer give to them.
The more you experience The Gambia, (not as a tourist) the more you will learn.
Think of creative long term projects you can invest in that promotes people helping themselves out of poverty.

A friend of ours is in hospital at the moment with chronic malaria. He couldnt have a bed at Banjul hospital so was admitted to a clinic somewhere near Sennegambia. I know he will have to pay but havent a clue what they charge. Does anybody have any idea? Do all hospitals and clinics charge people who are inpatients? |

Carolyn, Please read the postings above,at Hospitals there is a "BED Charge" of D50(last year anyway) plus medicines, dressings etc. What I would suggest is find the name and phone number of the medical facility in the Gambia, phone them up and speak to the office enquire as to the present condition of your friend and his account,I would suggest that you take a note of the person you speak to and their position in the establishment. You will then have all the information you require and make your decision. |

Its the Lamtoro clinic. I think mostly Europeans use it? The care he has received has been excellent, all the latest medicines and drugs but very costly! He almost died on Monday and seems to think if he had been in the hospital in Banjul he would have done? Thats a bit worrying to me,is it possible that the care is not as good? I dont know much about the medical care over there but learning fast! Im just so rellieved he pulled through. |

I have heard good things about Lamtoro so hopefully, Carolyn, your friend will be ok. He will be well looked after. But I've also heard it IS very expensive in comparison. I think the level of care at other places is as good as it can be but I don't think all the hospitals and clinics have access to the latest drugs. A friend of mine was in MRC (not malaria) and exceptionally well looked after (and it was free) but released too soon, and not given the much needed high dose of (correct) antibiotics; she flew home and spent three weeks in hospital in Uk and another month off work. Luckily she's fine now as I hope your friend will be |

Carolyn,I am sure all the readers of Bantaba will be happy that your friend has been successfully treated and is now on the mend, its good to know also the name of the clinic, just in case anyone should need medical attention.I have visited RVH in Banjul although the staff try their best they are often hampered by not having the correct drugs in stock and a journey to Banjul pharmacy has to be made,if you have no money to buy drugs this way then it is a big problem. |
