Kondorong,......You seem to confuse my opsting. I know many Camaras born withn the Wollof and have nothing to do with other Camaras. An example is the Jeli Sait Camara he is Wollof, Andrew Camara was a Fullah. ........
Non Muslims usually adapt the surname of the Imam who converts them to Islam in Gambia. This could be the reason why one finds a certain surname across other language groups than its original group.
I have seen examples of Guinea Bissau animist families who were converted to Islam and they took the surnames of the Imams. |

May i even qualify my pposting above. The Wolof Chiefdoms did not reach the northern fringes of Senegal. That was an area controlled by the Tuculor sect of the Fulani tribe around Podor and Matam. |

Q. Kon:Just because some is Camara and can only speak Fulani does not make him a Fula nor does it make him a Wolof. Camara is mandinka period. I know Charles Camara and I worked with him.
Am little confused here. Are all Camaras a Mandikah? and is it true that a Oalohou / Wolofo is not a tribe as they are almost from every tribe? this is NO offence! i heard this when i was leaving with two senegalese chatting on each other serer vs Fulani. one was called Sambah the other one name has gone off in my mind by now.
And What is a tribe because there are some having a different meaning

Contrary to what you may have heard, wolof is a tribe through and through just like mandinka. Their ability to welcome others has made it a lingua franca in the Senegambia region even though statistically, they are in the minority compared to Fulani and other languages. I have always admired their ability to integrate others and the sense of diplomacy that is inherrent in them.
Yes Camara is Mandinka. Its that simple.
