the rubbish dump opposite SOS has been cleared and the land flattened, watch out for land prices to shoot up around bakoteh, manji and kololi.

I heard they were planning to do that but thought it was 'pie in the sky'. I also heard that there are plans to plant trees or some king of commercial crop on the land. Does anyone know anything?

What sort of crop? You wouldnt want to eat anything grown on such polluted soil! Neither would you want to live in a house built over it. For many years there will be toxic gases.

I would think it should lie fallow for some considerable ammount of time until it is tested safe.

Jack......what can you advise on this subject?

It's been bought by an energy supplier. they have attached funnels to get the methane gas (left from all the rubbish) out and are going to build some kind of methane plant on the land. (Or so I heard when I was last there!)

Rumor control has it that it is an Indian project having been bought from the government, the developers are going to build appartments and shopping malls there,if thats true, land prices will increase, having heard this rumor I think that its unlikly to be used for housing or anything else for a few years as the infill has to have time to settle, and as was mentioned earlier if there is any rotting matter methane gas will be given off, this may be able to be utilised for cooking,or to drive a gas engine to generate electricity,so on balance I think a gas or electric plant is the option, having said that if it is an Indian project,Indians being very good buisnessmen they will get a big return on their money whatever they decide to do.

I am so glad that it comes to the end.
my compound is just 135m from that Odie area and we real use to feel the heat, it was indeed unpleasant oxygen we most leave with.
Thank god that its over!

Jambo, where from Gambia do you come fromYou mean the cost of land will now shoot up in Bakoteh, Manjai and Kololi...you clearly don't have any clue bruv....a piece of land is already very expensive in these areas and to acquire a piece in Kololi especially can cost you up a Million Dalasis. An average cost of a 30x30 can be upto D500,000-

I wanted a piece of land there but couln't afford it. If you go for a smaller piece, you maybe lucky to get it for D300,000-

I managed to get one in the Brusubi for less which is still not too bad...

That dumping site is a health victory...Mbay i am indeed happy for you because I know how terrible it was to the residents of the area.

It has interested me for some time that there appear to be many poor people living in Manji presumably in compounds bought by very rich people! There are also quite a few big compounds that are unbuilt on, I made a few enquiries and most of these are apparantly owned by Gambians who have been living in other countries for many years having bought when land was for Kola nuts,so they can return home when its time and build a house.

my uncle has done the same and we are advantageous through it today, and am doing the same, much more better than those apolitical forces (money-politically power).
