Why noi
Why not save the money , upon arrival in thr Gambia change to Dalasi and buy the car from Gambia to avoid all problems. It is cheaper and you avoid all paper work withn the adminstration and the transport is registered.

Greetings tintinto. Hope this info.will be of some use to you. 3 years ago I sent a Mercedes 207D RHD van to the Gambia. I used Redcoat to ship it from Tilbury docks to Banjul on a ro-ro (roll on. roll off) ship. The cost for this was over £1000. Cost is determined by cubic volume of the vehicle so I took off all the mirrors which tend to stick out and stripped it down to a minimum length and width.
You would need to do the same with your Mitsubishi Pajero if it has side mirrors /bull bars to keep the price down. I was told that an average size car would cost about £350 to send, so your Mitsubishi might be about £500 to £800 but don't quote me on this. You will need to check with Redcoat as to cost. You could always consider paying for a container on a ship but I have no idea how much this would cost. Once in the Gambia Banjul port authorities would not let the vehicle leave until it had been converted to LHD. This cost me another £300 so maybe yours would be cheaper than this . Depends on how many Mitsubishes the mechanics/engineers have done, what parts are needed etc. A word of warning. These ro-ro ships call into Dakar.
This can be very bad news. The battery was stolen as were the wing mirrors. I had sent books, clothes and other items in boxes screwed and nailed down to the floor. Some of these were stolen. Also the Blaupunkt R/C went missing. It can be quite risky doing this. On the other hand buying good reliable cheap cars in the Gambia is not as easy as you might think. For example I found a LHD Mercs.207D van with C reg. UK plates for sale in Serrekunda. Ok so it was in good condition but £5000 was a ridiculous price. My Mercs.van was 1988 E reg. and really worth about £750. Actually there is really little paperwork involved and shipping agents like Redcoat will sort this out for you. You will need a bill of laden to collect it from Banjul port. The paperwork in the Gambia is about paying for registration as a Gambian vehicle with Gambian number plates and insurance. I can't advise you on this. Whatever you do good luck.

also try robert clair, tel no 0207 231 9000, they are in london near bermondsey tube station, take care on the gambian side, they can keep you wrapped up in paperwork if you have not got in together with someone on the gambia side. Do you have family there who can help you.

Thank you all for getting back to me, regarding shipping. Santanfara,Alhassan, has Rassimian sent in his very helpful posting, vehicles in gambia do tend to be very overpriced, compared to England, that part i already knew, but still thanks. Jambo, yes thanks i have very good friends the other side, my business partner who i have known for several years, i have been going to Gambia 15 years now, so have good contacts. The vehicle in question is in excellent condition, but unfortunately is a "dead duck" over here, because we are missing, one vital piece of documentation to get it taxed, i have contacted Mitsubishi UK, and they have not been able to help!! It is sitting in our yard at present Worthless!!! and i think, from what i can see, could be worth around £5,000 in Gambia.

tintinto,
I hope your jeep is enviromentally friendly, otherwise I would not advice you to even try to ship it to Africa. Are you not awear of the case in Germany involving Africans trying to ship junk cars to Africa from Sweden and they ended up in trouble with the authorities. Try to find out what the enviromental law in your country before exporting from now on. There is too much junk in Africa and Africa must be junk free some how.

Alhassan, the vehicle is in excellent condition, no rot, and has not done one mile since having the very strict UK Ministry of Transport test, and i should no a good Commercial vehicle, because we have been sucessfully buying and selling them for about 35 years!!!! Thanks for your concern.

DOes it matter if it is left hand or right hand drive? DOes that affect the value?

I think cars in Gambia are relatively expensive compared to earnings and compared to the prices in other countries.

Alot of cars in Gambia that are imported have alot of mileage on the clock and noone in europe would want them.

A cheap secondhand car in europe is about £1000, yet in Gambia people are paying £5,000.

Gambians just seem grateful to have a car, no matter what the cost.

Tintinto, buy the time you have paid shipping, duty and 'extras' plus converting it to left hand do you think it is worth it?

WHat about a big adventure? You could drive across land to Gambia and then your car would arrive with you!!!!

Yes,that can be done don't forget that there are quite a few borders and checkpoints to go through and those staffing them will probably like a little something to speed up the paperwork that can lead to delays at these places so be prepared to use your skills in bargaining!!The cost of fuel in The Western Sarah I dont Know but at least the road is supposed to have been tarmaced now! Good luck...................................................................................ah!

Don't know whether your Pajero is worth 5 grand in the Gambia. Depends what you think it is worth in the UK if you were going to sell it. I have recently returned from the Gambia and there were plenty of cars and vans for sale. Too many I suspect for them to be sold at the prices wanted unless bought by Gambians with lots of money.
If you want to take the risk as I did and not bother with putting tax on your Pajero( but insurance is vital) if you decide to ship it,drive it to Tilbury during the night/early hours of the morning.
Driving a RHD vehicle to the Gambia you would definately need it to be taxed and insured and the border crossing at Rosso is a big problem. Fuel is cheapest in the south of Morocco. I met a German guy who drove his LHD VW Polo from Germany to Gambia in 6 days !. It cost him £70 to get it across the ferry at Rosso. You would probably need to get your vehicle converted to a LHD anyway if you were using it in the Gambia for any length of time.

rassimian, driving the Pajero to Gambia for me at present is not an issue, the idea was started by Gambiabev, i thank her for the idea but cannot do it at present. I am told that with the relevant paperwork, in England it would be worth £5,000, so judgeing by the crazy prices they ask in Gambia for vehicles it could be worth £8,000.Plus also remember there is still the issue, that left in this country without the paperwork it is useless!!!

YEAH, what you gonna do with it? You could always donate it to Kolior, my village so they have access to hospitals etc in emergencies. At the moment all they have is a donkey and cart and a bike. Would make alot of different in a rural community!!!
