i hope my western sisters know the answer. vegetarianism is now becoming common eating habit. just throw your answer. the winner will get a bantaba quix head of the day. any one else can ask us similar questions.

I thought it is about the believe in reincarnation. Hindu's dont want to eat their ancestors, brothers and sisters reincarnated as an animal. |

Santanfara, I agree with Jack's analysis in as much as it explains why vegetarianism became a Hindu practice. However, I have another take on the question.
As I see it you are asking what is the 'REAL' reason Hindus are vegetarian.
If by that you mean what prompts the majority of Hindus to follow a vegetarian diet, then I would say custom and tradition. |

Jacks is right - Hindus believe in reincarnation and this is why many Hindus (not all) are vegetarians. The Jaina, an orthodox group, even cover their mouths because they fear to swallow insects which could be their reincarnated ancestors. |

congrajulations jack . you are the quiz head of the day. others got it right as well but you are the first to answer the question. leokat went further by adding the cultural aspect but i was looking for religious reasons. many hindus themself don't know the reason ,they just follow suit. many in europe eat chicken and burger .they tend to relax the matter. jack can you elaborate further as to why some may be reincarnated as animals not humans ? there are many ways one can be reincarnated .some westerners think it is because of love for animals like the animal right activist .

I realy don't know how the systems works (religion is not my speciality lol), but could'nt it be to do with the cast-system in India. The higher the cast you are born in the higher "level" you got reincarnated ? Or maybe it has to do with the way of living. If you lived like a donky maybe you return like one..... if you lived as a thief, you return like a craw, ... lol. But its a secret to me what way you must lived in your former live to be reincarnated as a jelly fish.......... |

For Hindus a cow is sacred and they would never eat it.
Reincarnation is to do with how you lived your life. If you were very bad perhaps you come back as a slug or snail?!
I dont believe in reincarnation, but do believe in respecting all living things (except wasps!)
Vegetarian diet is very ecologically sound and if we were all vegetarian than the planet could produce plenty of food for everyone.
Personally I compromise. I eat no eat or meat based products. But I do eat fish for my health and I like the variety that gives my diet. I prefer natural fish rather than farmed fish for ecological and health reasons. Farmed fish is fattier in general. |

I think its the same. The name West Indies comes out of the time europeans (Columbus) try to reach India by the western route and so the ended first at the Caribian islands.
2nd ? : no idea |

The king who was beheaded was Louis XVI. The "slogan" was freedom, equality and brotherhood - or something like that. And still is, I think. |

You are probably right Kiwi. But the terminology must then be : liberté, egalité et fraternité.
