So now comes another birthday. Our dear country, the Gambia will be 42 years tomorrow, February 18th 2007. It is true that She is aging, but to reflect on "independence" means to reflect on the successes and failures of a nation since its time of birth from British Colonial rule. "Freedom" and "liberty" are key areas to look at in assessing independence. Infrastructural development cannot be a major tool for assessment of independence, though it cannot be left behind. So when we weigh things, how independent are we today? What is there to celebrate?

Nonetheless, it's our day-a national day, despite all that happened and is still happening. I wish every Gambian, a very lovely day tomorrow. Please find time to read the nice wording of our national anthem, though, you may be far or near from her.

Long live the Gambia!
Long live her true people!!

www.statehouse.gm (visit site and listen to the melodeous song)

Gambia's national anthem.

"For The Gambia, our homeland,
we strive and work and pray,
That all may live in unity,
freedom and peace each day.

Let justice guide our actions
towards the common good,
And join our diverse peoples
to prove man's brotherhood.

We pledge our firm allegiance,
our promise we renew;
Keep us, great God of nations,
to The Gambia ever true.

- Adapted from the traditional Mandinka song 'Foday Kaba Dumbuya' "

Toubab, you name sound like foreign to me. Good to know you are Gambian too.

Omega,

i wish you many more years to celebrate your birthday with us, just days before we raise our national flag each year. Thanks for being among Gambians, shows you care for Africa, though, your threads always supported a renowned tyrant of a living century-your political opinion.

Momodou, thanks for the National Anthem. The kondorong character will love it so much, while dressed in a fulani "hat" and decorated "daba-kurtu".

Happy celebration to all!

Dalton, aog
