DISABLED PERSONS ARRESTED
By Abdoulie Dibba

Information reaching this paper reveals that two visually impaired persons and many other physically disabled persons were on Monday and Tuesday arrested in Banjul and Serrekunda by the Police. According to the source, two of the visually impaired persons were granted bail through the intervention of GOVI. However, the source informed our reporter that they were subjected to daily reporting at Banjul and Serrekunda Police stations, respectively.
Talking to this reporter on the issue, the President of the Federation of the Disabled, Mr. Muhamadou Corah, said it is unfortunate that their members are arrested. He said when they received the information of the arrest, they went to Banjul and Serrekunda Police Stations and received the same information from the Police that “they were arrested because they were begging and want to clear the streets of beggars. “This is what the Police in both stations told us” he said. As to their plans to address the situation, Mr. Corah said he is currently writing letters to the executive members of the federation for a meeting. He said they would discuss matter with a view to coming up with a decision on the issue. Attempts to get the comments of the Police PRO proved futile.

All the (generally wonderfull) disabled people I know have to beg. How else can they feed themselves and their families?
If the government wants to clear the streets of disabled beggars then they must support them - not give them a hard time...

Is it not the Muslim way to give alms to the poor and those in need?

Handicapped people don't want to beg or be handicapped but as Lily says who will support them. BUT having said that I know of a handicapped couple who travelled from Conakry to Gambia on their own, he has Polio and runs a small stall by himself selling sweets and cigarettes he also mends shoes as well!, his wife has only one leg and does embrodery on bed sheets, they are coping for themselves.

Well brothers and sisters let those doing this remember disability is not a commodity which you can buy in the market. No man is above the nom of disabilty. iT's those in the streets today and tomomorrow it could be me or you cos some of these disable are not born disable. It's time we include them in the society they are part of us.Arresting these people for beg is not the solution to the problem is only going to increase our prison capacity.Let the authorities responseble put forward a proper system that's going to help these people out of the streets.
Peace

i am not sure why they were arrested is it not normal just to ask them to move away or not to come back to that spot. they did this in senegambia because it was becoming to much with a lot of people begging. they were never arrested just told to move on

Ah! OK perhaps the same thing has happened here, they were arrested and then dearrested(?) in other words told to move on, never going to a Police Station or appearing in Court, after all if you beg you have nothing,so how could you pay a fine? send handicapped beggars to prison and feed them?, I dont think so.
If the Newspaper could contact their source again maybe we would have an update and things would be clearer.

i also think, to arrest a blind man goes against gambia spirit, put him in prison, take him to court for what, who pays
