I think the Speaker of the House MUST be an elected Member of Parliament and not a nominated one.Given the fact that the Vice President is also selected and not elected, having the speaker also a nominated member, means all the two people in line of succession to the presidency are not voted in by the citizens.

Its against any descent democratic ideals of being a choice of the people. I think we need a constitutional amendment.

I also think the Vice President should be a running mate with the president in the elections. That way we could atleast say, they held those offices(Vice Presidency and Speaker) BY CHOICE OF THE ELECTORATE.

They are both political offices and as such should be subjected to political votes.

wHAT DO YOU THINK.

Kondorong,
What has happened during the nomination of the speaker happens in Sweden too. It is a practice that after the change of colours in parliment, the speaker too changes. It is indeed democratic. In my opinion, the speaker must not be an elected MP.The elected MPs are there to serve the people who elected them. The ruling party can nominate a speaker if they choose to do so. Then if the opposition has a candidate too they can present him/her and then the elected MPs vote for the best person for the job. I doubt if this does not happen in some other countries too.

It does happen in other countries but i think to be more democractic, the speaker should be an elected memeber of parliament because he is second in line to the presidency and it enforces legitimacy.

As for the vice president, it should be an elected office immediately.

Thanks for your analysis. They are appreciated.

Kon,
Under our constitution, the president is empowered to select speaker, members of cabinet,Police chiefs, heads of judiciary, commissioners{now governors} and in the second republic constitution, all the above with district chiefs, village Alkalolus{Who know with Fatou J sisay at the helms of our legislature,we might give His excellency the new powers to select Imams and priests for our mosques and churches}.You have to remember the fact that when Gambians voted Jammeh into power, they have given him power to do all these empowered by our constitution.
This has been the practice since the British left.I am only surprised that they {The British} do not practice such in their country. They have an independant, impartial speaker.

In addition Parliament has approved into law for the President to send them all packing indefinitely. Its funny how the legislature can vote allowing the President to suspend all of them indefinitely

It still beats by imagination that they can be so dumb as to allow themselves to be sacked with impunity. Only in the gambia...

Interestingly, the only question raised in parliament was if they will still get their salaries while on suspension by Oga

Seperation of powers? Did i hear someone ask that question. TOTO NAA KONO KONO FENG MU TOTO TAA LETI.
