Claims and Counter Claims Monday 22nd January 2007
Lamin Waa Juwara is in the news again. This time around to brush aside claims that he had switched his allegiance to the governing Alliance for Patriotic Re-orientation and Construction (APRC) party. He affirmed that nothing could be further from the truth, scoffing at the claim as “unfounded and baseless”. If he had joined the APRC, it would have been a big blow to the opposition, generally. The opposition still needs a strong and respected voice like his to give it steam. For those of us in the newspaper business, Waa Juwara is a seller any day, because when he speaks, the people listen. And in the political terrain, he is a lion whose roar keeps the powers that be on their toes.
But due to the whirlwind of power play, Waa Juwara has been at odds with some key members of the opposition for some time now. This has probably sparked the rumour of his defection to the APRC. And given the fact that politicians are a chameleonic breed, taking on the prevailing colour, the rumour spread with the speed of a wildfire. It could be that the other side of the political divide concocted the story to create confusion within the opposition. If so, then they nearly succeeded because the rumour sent shock waves throughout the opposition. With Waa Juwara’s refutation of the defection claim, the opposition is rallying again. But Waa Juwara is now playing into the hands of the other side of the political divide with his gratuitous diatribe against Hamat Bah. It was this mutual distrust and acrimony among the top echelons of the opposition that tore the National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD) apart sometime ago, thus giving way to the near one-party state that is now entrenching itself. The opposition members should avoid petty squabbles among themselves and work hard towards a common goal - getting as many opposition members into the National Assembly as possible. Better still, they should do all that they can to dominate the legislature. Waa Juwara ought to know that the fox has to be driven away before the hen is warned against wandering too far into the bush.
By contrast, Janko Jawneh of the APRC, who was also rumoured to have called it quits with his own political fold, has openly endorsed the candidature of his Phoday Kebbeh, the APRC candidate for Wuli West. In one fell swoop, Jawneh has rehabilitated himself and given the public the impression that all is well within the APRC.
This is a lesson the likes of Waa Juwara have to internalise. Much of politics is about image, impression, or even illusion. The ability to inspire optimism in people even when their world is falling apart is the hallmark of a good politician. A politician, who cannot absorb pressure either from within or without, is unlikely to win the confidence of the people. Each time the opposition members throw mud at one another, the people lose confidence in them. And the other side of the political divide watches with glee at the chaos ravaging the opposition camp.
January 25 is just around the corner; but it is not too late for the opposition parties to bury their differences and fight for the dominance of the legislature. We want to see real democracy work in the Gambia.

Notwithstanding the fact that I am not a fan of the observers, they are reporting that Waa has expressed his support for the APRC candidate. I will take it with a grain of salt since it is coming from the APRC candidate who might be using Waa's name for his own political gain. Here is snippet: Essa Saidykhan, the APRC candidate for Niamina Dankunku constituency, has said that Mr Lamin Waa Juwara of the opposition NADD alliance, has expressed his support for his candidature in the forthcoming National Assembly elections slated for January 25.

This is definitely the nailing of the coffin for Waa Juwara. Instead of showing some element of maturity, he has decided to allow silly sentiments to prevail over common sense. What people fail to realise is that this is a man who is too scared to contest for the Dankunku Seat. I won't be surprise to learn that his Uncle Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara has advised him to join the APRC
Watch out for the next bombshell |

It is not beneath Fafa Jawara. After all, he decided to cut a deal with the devil and leave his erstwhile comrades in the cold. The Sara Janhas, Bakary Darboes and Saikou Saballys were his lieutnants. Today they live in exile while Jawara wine and dine with the dictator trampling on the rights of our people.

Thanks Ousman. I think when people forward pieces from other sites they should give credit to those sites. You cannot just copy a piece from another site and paste it here as if you wrote it. It is call copy right and we need to respect it.
This is not meant to be a shot at Nyarikangbanna or anyone, but just an honest reminder to all of us. I hope you understand. Peace... |
