Lets be serious here. Its ok to increase prices and stay float. But 30% is just too harsh a raise. Fuel prices did not increase by 30%.

Madiba

My electricity bill is 500.00 minimum a month and i ddont have power for more than 6 hours a day. a 30% increasse in rates takes me to D650.00 convenienetly. I dont have a freezer, or an electric iron or electric cooker. With 24 hours electricty my bill will coneveniently be at D1950.00.

Given that the electric iron and cooker use enegery ten times an electric bulb, D5000.00 is a conservative figure.

Breadman

Tell the president to tell us where our crude oil from Nigeria is heading to. Gambians need to know. We are getting sudsidised oil yet our prices are still through the roof. Think about it. Unfortunately, i dont see the Presidency but the state. I careless who is president so long as that person is responsive to the masses.

Even if you are president, i careless as long as you serve the people. My candidate is the one who is open enough to face the country.

Gambians like any other society are willing to pay for quality services rendered. If there is 24hrs electricity available it shouldn't be a big deal for people to pay for what it is worth.

The unfortunate and cruel thing is for people to be expected to pay without getting the services they are paying for. Again with 24hr electricity, one can have other avenues to earn a living without depending on a merger salary or support from distant relatives.

What is unjust and inhuman is for everything else declining in the economy while cost of living is skyrocketing. The Breadman must understand that fingers are pointed at government because they are the policy makers. The governing environment is not acceptable no matter who you support. Let government get its nose out of business and allow free market competition.

Yahya Jammeh is President and running business in every corner of the state. He has his own Phramaciticals, selling rice donated to Gambians, and he is building a kingdom in Kanilai. How can any sober mind look at that and not criticise the regime. The breadman must be enjoying a piece of the cake - no wonder he is content with what he is getting. He is right though, if you cannot get anything better, you might as well be happy with something regardless. It shouldn't be that way...

Konds thats a good response from a good serahule. I still believe that something is wrong with your bill. Our family compound has two fridge freezers which are continously on, plus 4 DVD players and a dozen or so Musical sets, plus half a dozen TV sets or so ,plus a dozen or so Electric Fans, with a dozen or so bulbs yet the highest bill i had ever paid for them 18months ago was D600+. Some tenants may even use elctric iron or other appliances. So either your meter is faulty or the meter reader gives you an estimate as they alledgedly do.

Honestly Gambians cannot afford 24 hours electricty going by the current bill rates. Incomes are at their lowest. Some pensioners receive D50.00 per month or less whilst full time employees earn D500.00. The highest paid civil servant earns less than $150.00 per month.

You do the math.

Spot on Kondorong! We have one fridge freezer and one TV and electric water pump, plus lights of course, and just recently we have the luxury of a hot water heater, and our electric is 2000 - 3000dls per month. The increase is excessive and many people will be unable to pay. NAWEC have said that eventually everyone will be on a cash power meter then you will only have electricity if you pay in advance!! We had our meter checked and it is ok, but the guy offered to slow it down for a donation, which we obviously declined.... wonder how many people do that, and could that be a reason for such a big increase, to pay for people that are not. Also for cash power with 1000dls you would get 125 units, now with the increase it has dropped to 95 units. Maybe we could move into Madibas compound!!!! It will now be cheaper to run the generator, and if every other roadlight on the highway was turned off it would save a fortune.

No more rooms Toubab. Cos the long term tenants won't let you. Besides no electric irons and no hot water heaters are allowed. The guy who offered to wind it down is still capable of letting it go on the loose. so watch out!! I think the cash power is a good thing especially wen you live in the same compund with tenants.no one cheats the other. That's wat most of us students have here in the UK. Its helps to consume reasonably attimes

hello everyone. i read all your post with fascinating interest.
I even laughed. Not at what was said, but at how life is and how being born in a different place can affect your outlook.
@kondorong if you only get 6hrs of electricity how do you keep your computer on after the 6hrs?

And could someone tell me what is a compound? i don't want to go away with the wrong idea, so a definition would be appreciated.

reading you all with interest.

Compound is a dwelling in Africa especially in The Gambia, where besides the buildings for humans, there is space for other things such as court yard, gardens, animal pens, play grounds etc etc. I hope this helps?
