Cornelius, thanks for the optimism in getting good news from the Gambia. The reality is that these kind of statements are not new and don't constitute good news to us any more.

The President sometimes utters the most sincerity of words, but acts the opposite almost all the time. As a leader, we expect him to hold himself to the same or higher standards as he expect from his subordinates. The buck stops with him and he is a better living example than anyone following him.

The sad thing is that the President don't seems to differentiate between developing a decent nation to building structures without the human resource and mechanism to support it. He does not know the significants of continuity in government operational procedure and maintaining experience personal in their right expertise. This is why he appoints and fires at will without any investigation whatsoever.

The good news we need is for the President to issue reconciliatory messages and free all political prisoners. He need to reach out to the opposition to form a goverment of National unity. He needs to solicit the advice of professionals in carrying out his daily duties and hold himself accountable to the people that elected him. He need to additionally reach out to the Gambian intellectual community in the diaspora and partner with them in building a true democracy and sustainable economy.

Thes may be dreams on my side, but this is what will constitute good news from the Gambia. Words don't mean anything if they cannot be transformed in action. Real good news is what we expect from the Gambia not public relation campaign that don't mean anything...
